Sorrento hotels

Will be traveling through Italy for two weeks and ending up in Sorrento from October 2-6 to explore the area and the Amalfi Coast. Since it is the end of our trip we wanted to treat ourselves to a nice hotel with a balcony and sea views so booked the Hotel Grand Riviera. Four nights will cost $2,000. Now I’m having second thoughts due to the price. So I started looking again but so many places are booked. Any hotel or b&b suggestions?

We very much enjoyed our 4 night stay in May at this hotel
Chose it for location and views
The room was huge and very nice, also had an excellent bkft
It was a bit of a splurge for us but it wasn’t $2000!

We’ve stayed at La Tonnarella twice for a week each time. Love it. You can get a room with a private terrace for considerably less than $500/night. You can also get a balcony for less than a private terrace (but i do recommend the private terrace). The hotel is on a cliff, a 10 min easy walk from town with amazing views of the Bay of Naples, Capri, Naples, Mt Vesuvius and Sorrento. The hotel has a very good restaurant, a private beach, several terraces, lots of flowers.

We also stayed at Grand Hotel de la Ville several years ago. We were on a guided tour so had no idea what the nightly cost was. It was lovely. We had a sea view, with a private balcony. The breakfast buffet was the best we had in Southern Italy. We would stay there again!

After reading Janis’ post i realized i forgot to mention that La Tonnarella also has an amazing breakfast buffet included in the price.

We stayed at a similar hotel (Ambasciatori) at a similar price. We had six or eight months advance planning, but Sorrento does book up that far in advance. The Ambasciatori was at least fifth down my list, and the most expensive. (Our host has called it "a worthwhile splurge.") I suggest that you embrace what you have and enjoy the comfort and luxury. I think the Riviera was closed for renovation when we were at the Ambasciatori, so make sure you have current photos or reviews (say, on Trip Advisor) to verify the price/value ratio. I recommend the Ambasciatori, in a similar price range.

Sorrento is built on a cliff, and the few cliffside hotels have, by far, the best views. Most of those cliffside hotels have wooden boardwalk swimming platforms (in addition to clifftop pools) in the gulf, reached by the hotel's elevator. See if the Riviera has this feature. There may be a bar down there, too. Although there can be a small incidence of seagull ... deposits ... on balconies, these balconies have spectacular views, from Naples to the Sorrento marinas. Vesuvius is in view, clouds permitting.

Sorrento has plenty of budget housing, with lower luxury values. But you are too late to get it. A view from an upper story in the center of town is not the same to me as a cliffside location.

Sorrento has only one, tiny, rather urban sand beach, situated between the two marinas, with a smell of diesel fuel. It takes a paid bus ride or a paid elevator to get there from town. Well, you can walk down the steep hill if you are cheap. You'll hear the ferry horns, but no odor at your hotel location! (Check water and air temperatures expected for October. We were there in May.)

A few hotels you could have a look at.....

  • https://ilnido.it/ (located on a hill overlooking the bay, so has incredible views - offers a free shuttle to the downtown once an hour - seems to get consistently good ratings)

  • https://www.hotelsettimocielo.com/en/ (located more in town and again offers great views)

  • http://www.desireehotelsorrento.com/ (more of a budget hotel, but very comfortable - has a rooftop terrace that has great views - located right next to to La Tonnarella so you can splurge on a fine meal there rather than spending your money for an overpriced room - it's on the edge of the city but an easy 10-15 minute walk to the downtown, not difficult at all).

You could also splurge for a fine hot meal at https://www.lanticatrattoria.com/newsite/en/ (excellent food, IMHO).

If you win the Lottery and decide to go for an expensive room, I'm sure you'd be very comfortable at the https://www.bellevue.it/ .

For other choice, check the RS Italy guidebook.

Susan, I know this was an old post, but after reading it just now, we booked Hotel La Tonnarella for April 2020. The property looks beautiful! One question- did you come in via the airport in Naples? The site says there's an airport shuttle, but no details are provided. Are you able to add any info regarding this? Thanks so much for taking the time to post. Safe travels!

Hi Pat, on our second visit we did but we had a private driver pick us up. Sorry i’m no help there. I’d email them for more info. Enjoy your stay! I think you’ll be very happy there.

Again, late reply but the thread content helped me immensely! I have booked 4 nights at Il Nido based on so many positive reviews... and the fact that going in March many others are not yet open. It's great when I can find answers without having to start a new thread. Gotta love researching!
