Sorrento hotel/transportation advice

We are headed to Sorrento/Amalfi for three day during our trip this summer. Trying to nail down accommodations. This stop is about 2/3 of the way through a 19 day trip so I know we will all be ready for a bit of R&R while we are there and am therefore looking for a place with a pool. I've found several affordable and amazing looking options but many are up the hill from the town center. So my questions are:

Is Sorrento walkable? Should we stay in the town center?
How hard/costly is it to taxi to/from town center a short trip up the hills on Via Nastro Verde?

Thanks!

Sorrento is very walkable. It is essentially one main drag running along a cliff and a smaller, lower town with a harbor. I stayed in the center of town so I can't answer the taxi/cost question.

Many hotels on Nastro Verde have shuttle services, check the hotel websites. There are also public bus routes that go along the road. Public taxis in Sorrento are very expensive, it cost us (2 pax) 35 euro from Sorrento railway station ie town centre to our hotel La Vue D' Or (which has a pool) on Nastro Verde some 6 years ago. Have not done a similar journey recently but an in town journey of just under 2 kms cost us 16 euro a couple of years ago.

You could quickly wipe out any savings staying away from town with the high taxi fares. We were shocked at how expensive taxis were and how they appeared to drive the 'long way around' when we visited a few years ago. (it may have been that the taxi due to road issues had to drive that circuitous route from the train station to our hotel, but it felt like a hosing at the time.)

From Via Nastro Verde by bus to the center of town is about 15 min.

We stayed at the Hilton Sorrento Palace because I was using points. Not a very "authentic" Italian option, I know. But I was happy with my stay. The pool is huge and very impressive. It was about a 10 minute walk to the main drag and a ten minute walk to the Circumvesuviana station. The walk to the hotel is up hill for the final stretch. With the luggage, it was not a lot of fun. But without luggage, it was a nice opportunity to burn off dinner/wine/gelato. I agree the town of Sorrento is walkable.

As someone else stated, you definitely pay a premium price for taxis in Sorrento and to take you to/from the towns on the Amalfi coast. Parking is scarce in most of the Amalfi coast towns, a little better in Sorrento. And there is pretty much only one main road. So you definitely pay more for the convenience of a taxi.

Depending on the number of people with you and your plans, you may consider hiring a private car service and working that into a day trip or sight seeing excursion. There might be a time for you when taxis are your best option depending on your budget. But if you plan on just taking taxis everywhere, it will be very expensive.
