Sorrento hotel to Rome airport hotel

We are starting to work on the details of our May 2023 trip to Italy. Air and hotels are booked. Have been to Italy a few times, but not the Amalfi area. It is my husband and myself, seniors with carry- on luggage.

Leaving Amalfi will be at the end of our trip, and I'm balancing energy levels and convenience with expense. I don't want to spend time in Rome on this trip.
The easiest is to book a car directly from our Sorrento hotel to our hotel at the Rome airport. This would allow us to have a last full day in Amalfi, as I'm assuming a car takes about two hours, probably in the early evening? We have been emailing recommended drivers, including RS recommendations, and getting quotes between $500 and $800.00. Are these the going rates? If so, I'm going to have to deliberate awhile on this.....

To use other options is a taxi to the Naples train station, train to Rome Termini, and then the airport express train, and onto the Hilton at the airport ( shuttle?) I'm thinking this is a half day project, at least, and wouldn't allow much time on the AC on the last day.

Are there any in-between options? Any airport shuttles from Naples airport to Rome airport, that are reasonable?

I have learned so much here on the Forum, so I look to the experience and expertise here on the Forum. Many thanks in advance.

Maybe this provides insufficient convenience for you, and it might conflict with your energy level, but 10 years ago, at almost official Senior age, and following major surgery, my husband and left Sorrento in the morning. We took the Circumvesiana train to Naples, which presented some issues with one guy who didn’t appreciate us having luggage as the train got more and more full approaching Naples. There was no baggage storage racks, so we had them at our seats. Reaching Naples, we took the train towards Rome, getting off at the Ostia Antica stop, which was a very short walk to the Ostia Antica ruins site.

The guards let us stash our suitcases in their hit, while we went in a toured the ruins for 60-90 minutes, until it closed for the day. We then took a taxi to the airport Hilton for our early morning flight the next day.

Convenient for us (albeit crowded) trains, fascinating archaeological sight last day, easy taxi to airport, short walk to the terminal for our morning flight. Win, win, win, win.

Cyn,
thx for the prompt reply. Our first thought was to treat ourselves, but as the prices are coming in, it seems to be an expensive treat. In the beginnings of trips I'm all hung-ho for jumping on and off trains, but by the last day, I'm ready for convenience.( Not everywhere is as easy as Switzerland....)
Safe travels.

Pat,
I traveled with a friend in May of this year to the Amalfi Coast after completing a my-way RS tour. We used Mondo Tour guide and enjoyed every moment. We had a driver pick us up at the hotel in Rome and drop us off at the airbnb apartment in Sorrento. The following day the same driver (per our request) along with a licensed guide spent the day sightseeing along the coast and visiting two lovely towns. The guide was easy going and since she lived in Sorrento for many years, was knowledgeable on the history of AC. She took us to locations for picture taking that we would not have otherwise visited. The following day my friend and I took a ferry to Capri for a day of shopping. On our last day our favorite driver from Mondo Tours promptly arrived for our return trip to the airport hotel in Rome. I would highly recommend Mondo Tours. Vincenzo took the time to ensure our trip was a success. Without our friendly driver and experienced tour guide, we would not have had such a memorable trip!

Please check that two-hour figure, it sounds unrealistic. My off-the-cuff guess is 3-4 hours, Sorrento-FCO by private car. You have to decide if that's luxurious or tedious. You have to allow for the very high probability that the car has to return EMPTY, and for the high cost of gas in Europe. I don't think those quotes are rip-offs.

I find the Frecciarossa rail service from Naples to Rome Termini to be clean, cool, and really fast, 1.5 hours or so. You have to judge how annoying is the switch to the airport train. I'd expect a car service from Sorrento to Naples rail station to be 120 Euros or so. A very good value, especially if you'd have a 20 Euro cab ride in Sorrento to the Circumvesuviana. We used a car for this leg when we were only 60ish, having used the CIrcumvesuviana on the way to Sorrento.

Good news: The Hilton at FCO is so on-airport that it has its own elevator (100' from the door, not "in" the hotel) from the concourse level of the airport. It could be a long distance on foot, but no taxi or shuttle is needed. And I think you could use a baggage cart for a long part of the walk, if your bags don't roll.

Said gently: Not to quibble, but only for discussion clarity, Sorrento is not on the Amalfi Coast. I mean, on the internet, you should try to avoid phrases like "Leaving Amalfi" when you are neither on the AC, nor in the town named Amalfi. It will lower the quality of responses you get.

Edit: Bad news: The Hilton FCO has huge customer turnover. There are lines in the lobby all day long. You should join HHonors just so you can be sure you don't have to stop at the desk on your way out. It's a modern, attractive building, but our room had elevator noise all night. Before you book your trip to FCO, call the hotel and find out what time the full restaurant shuts down on the weekday of your stay. (Unless you have outside dinner plans.)

You really don't have that many options. The prices sound about right. It is a fairly long trip. There is no airport to airport shuttle service. You might look at EasyJet to see if you could fly from Naples to Rome. A ticket well in advance might be cheap.

There is a bus a couple times a day from Sorrento to one of the Rome train stations. Working from memory but I don't think the bus goes to Termini. (someone will correct me) It would be quicker getting to Rome than the train via Naples. The car works a little better because you are coming from south and the airport is on the south side. Good luck.

Hi, all,
Thanks for the very needed clarifications.

Ian, pls private message me the prices you paid. Thanks for your input.

Tim, if driving takes about the same amount of time as public transportation, we're not gaining everything I had hoped. I guess there is also a traffic component. I believe we will be heading to FCO on a Saturday early evening. I will check to see if I'm Hilton Honors - is Hilton also Doubletree?

Can't figure out why 8 hours of touring is about 350 Euros, and Sorrento to Rome costs so much more, even when the RT for the driver is probably less than 8 hours. I'm guessing there's more competition with the day coast touring.

Frank, Upon further research, it looks like there's an express coach bus from the Naples airport to FCO. Has anyone used this? Thx for adding your info.

Please keep comments coming in- I'm learning so much!
Thanks again to all,
Pat

getting quotes between $500 and $800.00. Are these the going rates?

It is ~600 km round trip for the driver so a dollar/euro per km, from what I have seen, is typical.

Also 3 hrs one way is a best case scenario for travel time. 3.5 to 4 hrs of travel is, to me, a more reasonable expectation.

Christine and Joe, thx,
so I'm learning that spending the big bucks doesn't really save me time as opposed to using public transportation.
Have a great day, thx.

Have you thought about flying out of Naples? Sometimes those multi city routes can save time, money and aggravation.

Just a thought.

Pat, I mean this in a kind way, but have you traveled in Europe before? I'm asking that aggressive question in the hope you will give enough information and questions to plan your trip.

The first thing you do is plug a car trip into Google Maps. This gives a very approximate 3 hrs 9 minutes for the ride, 175 miles one way. At 25 mpg, that's 14 gallons of gas (say, 100 Euros) and 8 hours of hard work. When we paid about 320 Euros for a day on the AC from Sorrento, the driver drove at most 50 miles and spent much time (fair enough) playing cards with his buddies while we had our free-time in three towns.

How much is an Uber from Sacramento to Fresno, one way?

Although I don't consider Sorrento to be remote (as I do, Amalfi town), part of the appeal of the location is that it's not in a busy urban area. It's not an ideal comparison, but Cinque Terre, or rural Brittany, or the English Lake District have some affinity.

I live in a wealthy NYC suburb. When I took a taxi across five towns (a trip I drive several times a week in 20 minutes, 15 miles) because I had a patch on one eye, that was $50 and that was 25 years ago. Nobody is ripping you off. Your expectations are not reasonable.

Edit: In fairness to your perspective, I have noticed a tendency among younger posters here and on Trip Advisor, to believe that an Uber trip home from a bar, somehow, scales up to a one-way private-car vacation transfer, in another (Social Democracy, at that) country, of 150 miles or more. Even given the exploitative nature of the (American) "Gig Economy", the one has little to do with the other! It's like saying that a three-row luxury SUV should cost the same as two Toyota Yaris. It doesn't work that way.

Tim,
My original post was to gain perspective on the costs. Yes, I was mistaken regarding the length of the journey. I'm a well-travelled senior, going to Europe once or twice a year since my retirement 11 years ago. The beginning of this trip is Lake Como and Venice, which I have been fortunate to have visited in previous trips. I have never been to Sorrento and the surrounding areas. I always travel via public transportation, so have no experience with car travel in Europe.
Thanks for your efforts to enlighten me.
Safe travels.

Thanks so much for your courteous response to my questions. I've been to Italy several times, but I would not combine the lake district with Sorrento or further south. In truth, there are posters here who intend to visit both Cinque Terre AND the Amalfi Coast on the same trip, along with other major cities.

We put off Naples/Pompeii/Capri/Sorrento until we had our first and only trip to the Chelsea Flower Show. (There's a huge UK interest in Sorrento and the AC ... ) So we flew a bargain airline to Naples, from, probably inconvenient Stanstead. However, that's not a perfect plan, because our flight arrived (on schedule) so late that the Circumvesuviana wasn't scheduled to be running with certainty for us. So we planned a night in Naples, and had Pizza, the famous museum, and a nice long walk until an afternoon transfer on the Circumvesuviana.

We like public transportation too. I grew up on the NY City subway (and daily to high school.) But after the Circumvesuviana experience (late May) with luggage (zero personal safety incidents, and pleasant accomodation by local regulars, even), it was an easy decision to have the hotel call their land partner (charged to our hotel bill) for a Mercedes sedan back to the Naples train station, on our way home via Rome. We spent a couple of nights in Rome to avoid air check-in worries, at least our third time in Rome. Still plenty to see there! We considered our five nights in Sorrento well-spent.

As a sidelight, we met people at the hotel (Ambasciatori) cocktail hour who confirmed our decision to skip the Blue Grotto of Capri.
