Sorrento hotel suggestions?

We're heading to Italy in early June for 2 weeks. We're spending the first 3 nights in Capri then an additional 3 nights in Sorrento before heading to Portofino and Lake Como. My question is in reference to suggested hotels in Sorrento. I'm told by some (based on reviews) that staying in the center is "great". We presently have reservations at LaTonarella which is elevated from the center and it sounds like a 10-15 min walk up and down a STEEP hill up from the hotel to get to the center. Can you shed any light on the best place to stay in Sorrento? We LOVE a nice, full service hotel. Thank you!

The Grand Hotel Ambasciatori will knock your socks off. Perched on a cliff directly on the beautiful Mediterranean with an elevator down through the rock all the way to sea bathing platform. The gardens are incredible and the food is to die for. If you want a grand experience the book yourself here.

We’ve stayed at La Tonnarella twice, for a week each time, and loved it.
It is not a very steep hill, it’s a gentle hill up (maybe 10 min) and an easy 5 min down to town. And the views are gorgeous as you walk. Or, you can easily take the bus from Piazza Tasso if you don’t want to walk, the bus stops practically in front of the hotel.
La Tonnarella has mind blowing views, a very good restaurant, outdoor dining, an amazing breakfast buffet, a private beach that we thoroughly enjoyed, several terraces, flowers all over, and nice rooms.

jan,

IMO, the walk to La Tonnarella is not "steep". It's a more gradual incline and quite a pleasant walk from the centre of town. If your budget allows you to stay at Tonnarella, I'd suggest keeping the reservations. The views from their dining room over the bay are stunning, especially at night with a cruise ship in the harbour.

We booked a lovely one-bedroom apartment on Home Away - with a pool and a view of the water, all within walking distance from town - for less than 300 euros per night. But we're there for more than three nights, which may make the hotel choice the obvious one for you. (I generally look for an aprtment if we're staying four nights or longer in a location, but that's personal prefernece.)

I stayed at the Antiche Mura a couple of weeks ago. In the center of town and on flat ground. Near everything and a short walk to the train station. Very nice breakfast.

We stayed at Hotel Mignon, it is center city but felt removed, very quiet. Breakfast was included in the price and it was very hearty with coffee drinks made to order. They have a beautiful little garden were we ate breakfast every morning, talked with other travelers and planned our adventures for the day. One night we walked to N'Hambu to grab some burgers and fries (Sooo good!), took them back to the hotel, had the garden to ourselves and ate under the stars, we still talk about that night. It was also an easy to walk to the train station for daily excursions.
