We are headed to Italy in May and are debating between an apartment or hotel in Sorrento. We will be there for about 5 days. We took the Best of South Italy tour a few years ago but I can not find my hotel list for that tour. Could someone recommend a hotel that they have stayed at that has a sea view? Or even an apartment. I have been looking at airbnb, homeaway and VROB and it gets overwhelming with the choices!
Thanks so much!
Cindy
Been here, http://ilnido.it/, and would happily go again
We loved Hotel Il Nido, too! It’s up above town, overlooking the bay. There was a bus stop nearby and the hotel ran a free shuttle into town (and back). We loved their restaurant and ended up eating most dinners there. Breakfast was great, too, with beautiful views and a very-popular fresh orange juice machine.
I am also a huge fan of il Nido. this will be year 9 or 10 staying there. now has absolutely, imo, best restaurant in Sorrento!
Very interesting that the hotel got three votes! Did you mind that it was away from town? We plan to do some day trips so will want access to the train and bus. What do you think?
I also have a report on a stay at Il Nido, about 10-15 minutes outside of Sorrento. Mostly positive things, with a few provisos. I stayed in 2014, so some things might not be exactly the same. First the excellent: (1) the restaurant is really excellent, with reasonable prices, and a good breakfast, generally included in the room rate; (2) the view is lovely, daytime and evening, including from the restaurant patio, where you can hang out even without eating, at off-times; (3) the staff there was very friendly and very helpful. The provisos: (1) the shuttle van to town runs frequently and on schedule, but sometimes you do need to adjust your schedule to the van's; when I was there, the van ran hourly from quite early morning until late morning, and then late afternoon into the evening (with lengthy mid-day break); the trip takes about 10-15 minutes (each way) although on some rainy days or market days, there is traffic congestion and it might take longer. So, for instance, one day I arrived by train from a long day at Herculaneum and Pompeii; I felt like dropping off some things in my room, cleaning up, and heading out to wander the town, but after walking from the station to the shuttle stop, I just missed one shuttle, needed to wait almost an hour, arrive in my room, do my stuff, and then wait another 40 minutes or so, to go back into town. So what would have been a 20 minute stop at an intown hotel, became a couple of hours or more. (2) I happened to choose the most affordable room, that was in a somewhat worn even shabby wing of the hotel; maybe that has been upgraded by now, but I think a somewhat more expensive rooms, maybe with a balcony and view, would be a better choice.
I stayed at Surriento Suites at the Marina Piccola for five nights and was very happy with it. You can find reviews on Trip Advisor. Beautiful views of the bay and Vesuvius from our window and we had a suite with two beds and a small kitchen area for a very reasonable price. The location is right where the ferry docks. I thought it was charming but be aware you will have to climb 100+ steps to "town" or take the elevator which as I recall was 1 euro. I liked being on the water and below the hustle and bustle of the main street, but it was still within walking distance of everything.

Thank you all for your replies! We will definitely check out all the suggestions and see what would work for us. I am a little hesitant to have to rely on a bus as we like to come and go.
Thank you so much!
We stayed at the Tasso Suites a few years ago and really liked it. They have some apartments. It's located in the heart of the city, so you can walk out the door and be right there. No worries about stairs from the beach or buses from the outskirts. They have a small lift. We were given a voucher for breakfast every day for a restaurant around the corner which was really nice - offered American-style breakfast if you wanted. We were arriving from the train station from Naples, and the hotel staff arranged for a private driver for us. It cost about 124 euro, but there were four of us to split it. Sorry, no sea view but wanted to give you another option. Enjoy Sorrento, it is wonderful!
