Jill,

You might have a look at Hotel Desiree in Sorrento. It's not luxurious but very comfortable and the owners are wonderful. It has a great rooftop terrace which is perfect for enjoying a glass of Vino on a sunny Amalfi coast afternoon.

It's right next door to La Tonnarella which is a bit more "upscale". They share common beach areas, etc. The view from the restaurant at La Tonnarella over the harbour at night is incredible!

Happy travels!

Jill, we stayed at Ulisse Deluxe hostel listed in Rick's book. It is definetely not a hostel, it is a hotel, we we're very happy with our choice, the hotel was very confortable, and the price very cheap, if you are looking for a view this is not it, but it is close to lot of restaurants, and shops.

Grand Hotel Ambasciatori is perched on the cliff with balconies hanging out over the Mediterranean. We had the 1 HUGE balcony which seemed like you were looking straight down onto the water below. There was a private sea bathing platform below that was reachable either by elevator or steps. It wasn't cheap, but it was sure nice.

Highly recommend Hotel Il Nido, which is family-run and operates as a B&B. Great value, spectacular views, outstanding restaurant. Il Nido operates a shuttle bus that makes a car unnecessary. Dino and his family took great care of us, even driving us personally to the train station early one morning. You can't do better for budget accommodations!

Check out Venere.com. You can sort the 100 plus accommodations that are available by price and location. Once you have identified likely candidates cross check with Tripadvisor for more information. FYI the reviews on Venere are from those who have actually paid and stayed so less liklihood of the false reviews that can crop up on other sites!

We visit in May and October and at that time usually prefer to stay in town. This is because we enjoy joining the townsfolk in strolling around in the evening. In addition the traffic on the main road is shut out, there is a wider choice of places to eat, the shops are open to 9pm and the large groups of visitors from cruise ships have left.

We stayed at the Hotel Aminta in May 2008. It is located in the Sorrento hill area. They do offer a shuttle bus to and from town several times a day. The views were amazing. We loved our room, the breakfast was great and it has a pool. Good luck in your search.

We're going to Sorrento at the end of May 2010 and we are staying at the Palazzo Guardati because was wanted to be right in the town center so we could experience Sorrento on foot with easy access to the trains and buses for trips to Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast towns. It got great reviews on Trip Advisor and I also scoured their website. We would have loved to have stayed at one of the more luxurious hotels with views of the Bay of Naples but the prices were budget-busters. Other places we looked at were too far outside of town and required a bus to get back and forth. We know travel selves well enough to know that walking is the best way for us to experience a city.

We've stayed at the Minerva and it has a lovely old world feel with great service, views of the ferries and boats to Capri & Naples and twinkly-downtown Sorrento at night. The pool is very nice as the Med isn't and feels wonderful on a hot day. Little hard to get the view balconies but all important. You don't want a lower room! Directly across the street we've stayed at Hotel Settimo Cielo. We even beat Rick's discount by paying cash. Smaller balconies but lots of them, very clean and good service, small pool mostly in the shade and the added view of Marina Grande. Mediocre breakfast in view room. Both are about 10-15 minute walk from the center but only a bit uphill. Nice grocery at the bottom for wine and snacks.

At the risk of being expelled from Rick's website, I'd recommend you check out tripadvisor.com

They have traveler's own reviews on - would you believe - 114 hotels in Sorrento.

Although this hotel is in the RS book, we were very pleased with Hotel Antiche Mura. We stayed there this past Sept.

Sorrento is one of our favorite destinations. We have stayed at Hotel Minerva and would second Karen's comments. It was a lovely place to stay but we like being closer to town. This past summer we accompanied my parents for their 50th wedding anniversary celebration in Sorrento. Dad was very specific and wanted to be in the center of town in a nice sized room with a balcony on the water. This was a big order. Our family usually stays in cost-conscious accomodations but you only celebrate your 50th once. We splurged on the Hotel Tramontano and it was absolutely worth it! I actually booked directly with the hotel about 6 months ahead and was able to get a reasonable rate. We felt like we had landed in a chapter from a E.M. Forester novel. The staff was excellent. The gardens and pool just lovely. This is not a posh, newly renovated, luxury hotel; but a subtly elegant grand dame whose patina of age becomes her. The antique furnished rooms were reminiscent of a bygone era when people took the Grand Tour and stayed for the Season.
