Sorrento Hotel for for 75 Year Old

My 12 year old daughter and I will be meeting my parents in Sorrento for a few days. My parents are seasoned travellers and will be coming off of 3 weeks in France when we meet in Sorrento. However, my dad is starting to have difficulty walking and just had a hip replacement. Can you recommend a hotel that will not require much walking to reach the center of Sorrento? I'm concered about his mobility and would prefer a hotel that has an elevator. Thank you for your recommendations.

Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria is adjacent to the town center but with beautiful gardens and a cliff side setting looking over the Bay of Naples and Mt. Vesuvius.

You can see a map on tripadvisor.com of Sorrento and dots for the locations of the hotels. You can see the center of town and see lots of hotels near the center.
Then you can click on dots or hotel/bed icons and read about each hotel, location, prices, amenities......
I know you will find something that fits your needs.

We've stayed in Hotel Antiche Mura and loved it. It's a flat, easy walk from the train station and from restaurants and shops in central Sorrento. Very nice outdoor area with a pool, and good breakfast.

I second Kathy's recommendation of Hotel Antiche Mura. Very convenient location, 10 minutes on foot from the train station and very close to the main piazza. Elevators and a great breakfast, kind staff.

We stayed in the Tasso Suites a couple of years ago and it was great. http://www.tassosuites.it/
It has a small lift. It's in the town center, so easy to walk to everything. At the time, they offered vouchers for breakfast at a nearby restaurant. The walk to the train station was about 10-15 minutes, no real hills that I can remember. I would definitely stay there again.

I haven't stayed at Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria but I sure would like to. You won't find a nicer, or better located hotel in Sorrento.

We stayed at a small hotell Villa di Sorrento right on the main sq. Elevator to rooms and our room had a fabulous deck with views and overlooking the central sq and sea, but yet still quiet for sleeping.
Brfast was vg. Squeaky clean and great ac and friendly owners are there daily. I highly recom this hotel espec for seniors. We were not seniors but enjoyed the convenience and sm hotel very much.

we would second tasso suites, just spent a number of days there ( our second visit) so handy to everything. great service, best of all is the 6 euro breakfast ( when not included) or it may be included with booking.( now in its own area downstairs) there is a good, old style restaurant next door. also short walk to the elevator that goes to the marina.

Because we stayed at a sister-hotel to the Grand, I would assume that they have magnificent gulf views, and an internal elevator to a boardwalk gulf bathing platform at the base of the cliff. If that would be important to the parents (as opposed to just level shopping and restaurants in town), then it's worth the luxury hotel money.

For example, is a Positano day trip out of the question for him? Sorrento's squalid little public beach does have a 2 euro elevator.

Thank you all for your replies! I've spent my life travelling the world with my parents (and on my own), but this is a whole new experience as they get older. My fear is that my dad still thinks he can do everything, but in reality he has slowed down quite a bit and can no longer walk the way he used to. I have contacted some of the hotels you recommended. We plan on visiting Capri, Amalfi Coast, Pompeii and the village where my grandmother is from (Recigiliano - inland). My daughter and I will also be in Rome.
My parents already have a reservation at the Hotel Prestige which is located quite a distance outside of Sorrento and has a shuttle bus to town. The hotel looks beautiful and has beautiful views, but will it be difficult to be constrained to taking the shuttle??

No idea as I'm not sure anyone on the forums has stayed there but personally, I wouldn't want to be 20-25 minutes away by shuttle (based on online forum comments). I also see comments that unless one dines at the hotel restaurant, there's nothing else within walking distance. It would be too isolated for me if planning for daily exploration of the Sorrentine and Amalfi coasts.

I do see that some guests took the bus to expand on the daily shuttle times.

It looks like people who stay there arrange lots of private tours, which are not our thing either so....

I think it would be much more enjoyable to stay in Sorrento and be able to walk out of the hotel and be right in the heart of it all.

A hotel in town makes it easier if someone forgets something in their room, needs to drop something off rather than carry it, needs a short nap, etc.

Kathy, those are my thoughts exactly. My parents made the reservation at the Hotel Prestige and are adamant about it. I would much rather be in the center of Sorrento. Private tours are not my thing either! I think they envision us leaving the hotel early each day and not returning until bedtime. This is unrealistic given their age and also traveling with a 12 year old.

One advantage of a central hotel is the opportunity to go back and relax in case of fatigue or infirmity. suzanne, you have not put your home city or country in your profile. So I don't know if I will offend you when I observe that many of those out-of-town hotels with shuttles specialize in group package tours for sun-seeking Brits. The other guests may be much less sophisticated travelers than your parents, as well as their being in an inconvenient location.

Do you know for a fact that your father can climb up the steps of a 20-passenger mini-bus?

Suzanne, Tim makes an excellent point. Having to mess around with hotel shuttles or buses - should they be infrequent - could be an issue if something is forgotten at the hotel or your parents/child poop out midday. You haven't mentioned what time of year your trip is? If it's midsummer, the heat could be a factor and wear your parents (and yourselves) out in a hurry.

Then again, your folks will be coming from 3 weeks (on their own?) in France so maybe they figure if they can do that, a couple of days running back and forth from the further reaches of Sorrento is no big deal. We rarely ever return to our hotel before evening, once we leave it, but some unexpected situations did send us hustling back a couple of times.

Very good points. Thank you everyone. We will be in Sorrento 1st week of October. I am searching for available hotels in the center of town now. The shuttle situation seems much too inconvenient.

Ah, nice time be there! We also stayed in Sorrento right about that time some years back and had (mostly) beautiful weather. We needed jackets in the evenings, when the breeze got a little cool, but not at all during the day. Hope it's the same for you. :O)

I also didn't mean not to acknowledge Susan's good advice in my last post: Tim AND Susan both made excellent points! I think you'll be happy that you decided not to stay so far away from the action.

When we feel like a splurge we book the two rooms on the top floor of the Palazzo Jannuzzi B&B hotel. It is located on Piazza Tasso so couldn't be more central. One of the rooms has a small bedroom (single bed) leading off and the other (which we use as a day room) has a small kitchenette alcove and a dining table and chairs. Both have lovely bathrooms. You have direct access to a large private terrace with outdoor furniture, the view is of the hills surrounding Sorrento. Their other bedrooms aren't bad either. The breakfasts are outstanding and on sunny days you can eat outside on the adjoing terrace. And the staff are really friendly.
