sorrento hotel for 2 nights? capri? naples?

You do not mention a budget but one of our favourites is the family run boutique hotel Palazzo Jannuzzi located on Piazza Tasso. Old building, modern interiors, lovely bathrooms, excellent breakfasts and very nice staff. http://www.palazzojannuzzi.com/ Naples, like most cities in Italy, has a restricted traffic zone (ZTL) in its centre and you will be heavily fined if you drive into the zone without a permit. You can travel by the local train to Naples from Sorrento. Takes just over an hour. Alternatively, you could catch one of the regular hydrofoils from Sorrento to Naples or do a mixture of the two.

We stayed at the Hotel Michelangelo - two blocks from the main center. Very clean, and not expensive. We walked everywhere in the evening, after taking many tours. To get to Capri, walk down to the ferries, and you're on your way. We love Sorrento !

In summer 2011, we stayed in the Hotel Carlton International. The rooms were very nice and reasonably priced. They even have connecting rooms which was perfect for traveling with our 2 children. Our room had a beautiful view over the sea and Mt Vesuvius. My mother's room overlooked the pool and orchard. Breakfast which was included was also good. They have a nice pool and orchard in the back of the property but be warned the pool closes early like around 6:00 pm. It is within walking distance of the train station and the town square. You can take to the commuter train to Naples and then the metro to within a couple of blocks of the museum with Pompeii artifacts. You can easily do the museum in 3 hours.
