Sorrento Help

So we are leaving Rome and heading down to Sorrento for the night. Here is our current plan and want some thoughts:

Day One:
Early train down to Naples from Rome and rent a car (or maybe rent in Rome on the way out).
Drive to hotel in Sorrento and park it there - they have free parking and can hold our luggage.
Drive to Positano and check out the coast.

Day Two:
Check out and drive to Pompeii at opening. Have them store our luggage. Get a guided tour.
Leave around 4pm for Naples airport for a 7:30pm flight to Paris.

We are heading there end of March/Early April so thinking driving will not be that bad. I am very confident in my skills and have watched the youtube drive from multiple people and it seems doable. I am not going in the summer. I am open to having a tour guide drive us however I am not sure of the point and do not want to arrive with intense carsickness and feel like I could have done it myself too.

What is a good thing to do in Positano for the day? I know a lot might not be open yet. I was thinking after a handful of hours we could head back to Sorrento to enjoy a late dinner. I looked into some boat tours but everyone I contacted has said they are not running tours that early in the season and the ferry will be tentative based on weather based on an email I sent.

There is not really much to do, just enjoy the views. There is a Roman villa.
If you are going to do it, then I'd really go for it and do a full scenic drive!

I'd probably leave about an hour earlier- in case of any traffic problems at rush hour and you also need to return car.

I will be leaving from Pompeii for the airport. Will it take more than 30 minutes to get there? When should I plan to be at the airport for the 7:30pm flight?

Every American is very confident in their driving skills. Are you saying you do get motion sickness? There's a big difference between driving four hours to Sorrento and one hour (with traffic luck) to Sorrento. Have you mapped out your planned drives? There is only one two-lane road in Positano, so you want to park where you won't have hundreds of steps to climb, and can get to the water and pier for the views back to the town.

It is likely that you will have to search for a paid parking space in Positano, even in March. There simply isn't much parking on the AC. You may find some businesses still closed for the season.

Be certain to stay away from the actual City of Naples when you drive to the airport. Have you found a rental company that is open at the airport for your schedule? It's not like a big city airport.

I agree that you may get away with a private car in March, but I'm not sure whether it will deliver more value than annoyances. Check for ZTLs, and bring an IDP. Is your Sorrento free parking within walking distance of the large downtown area? I'm just thinking of walking to dinner.

Are you traveling as a family of five, per an earlier post? I ask because that will require a bigger vehicle, which will be much harder to maneuver on the AC, and to find parking.

You’ll need to be at airport by about 5:30

If Google says 30 min I would double that to be safe
You have to account for getting from the site, back to your car, stopping to retrieve luggage (there may be a wait), driving during rush hour in an area known for traffic snarls and chaos, return the car then get to terminal

Honestly if you start your day when Pompeii opens you’ll probably be ready to leave by 3ish-it’s a huge site and exhausting visit

not be open yet.

Positano has a beautiful view from above and beautiful view from below. Total time needed...30 minutes, plus another 30 (if you're lucky) to find parking. March may be better, but never assume you'll find parking there. I thought Amalfi and Ravello were better choices to spend several hours at. My first vote would be Ravello.

Thanks for the tips. We are looking into them. I get very sick which is why I always drive and have driven mountain roads and have no problem with tight urban spaces either. I am going to also look into a guide as to not have to worry about parking and will compare costs. I currently have a reservation picking up a minivan at the Naples train station and dropping off at the airport.
