Sorrento - El Nido

Am I blind? Or did something change? I cannot find El Nido in the 2008 book. No longer recommended? I found it on line, but was wondering what the latest scoop is.

We want one night down in that area. We will have a car so we would like parking. We want a view. BUT we love really small. Any suggestions?

Carole,

we drove by El Nido on the way from our B&B to Sorrento ;-) 10 minutes drive from there. All the rooms at www.villamonplaisir.it offer a fantastic view over the Bay of Salerno. It's located in Torca, a small village in walking distance to Sant'Agata. If you like small that's it! Free parking is available as well. And Tina is one of the friendliest people I've ever encountered in Italy. She'll ask you what you would like for breakfast and will get you anything you like in addition to her homemade cake. At 90 Euro/night (+ 10 Euro for an extra room for our kids) that was probably the best deal we got in Italy in terms of value for money.

Even though it might not be in the book, people on this site and Tripadvisor still seem to rave about Il Nido.

We originally booked there for earlier this month, but we cancelled and switched to La Tonnarella instead. The two are very similar: great views, free parking, great restaurant, breakfast, etc. But, we decided against Il Nido for 2 reasons: we didn't want to rely on a shuttle bus (it's far off the beaten path - Il Nido means nest, so that is telling), and La Tonnarella has a private beach. However, La Tonnarella is more expensive than Il Nido.

We absolutely loved La Tonnarella and would definitely return there.

That's one of the things I wish Rick would explain further. He says he drops a recommended hotel or restaurant if it no longer lives up to its past greatness. But he never explains why.....

I guess I can understand why Rick would not go into all the reasons for dropping a hotel. It could cause a conflict and make enemies... get into he said, she said ...probably more drama than he needs or wants. I am sure the owners know why they were quietly dropped.

We stayed at Il Nido for 4 nights in Oct'07 and loved it. The place was clean & neat, the restaurant excellent for both breakfast and dinner and the view of Sorrento harbor and Vesuvius magical. We found it via the '07 version of RS' Italy guide. We have no clue why it was dropped from the '08 guide and neither did Dino, one of the owners, who we spoke with while we visited. I'd hate to be the one to make the call on what gets into the book and what doesn't. Il Nido was one of the highlights of our trip and we would stay there again in a second.
