Sorrento City Hotel

I am trying to plan a 2 week vacation. My thought is a week in Rome and a week in Sorrento to see the Amalfi coast area with Capri and Pompeii and the volcano, and Positano. Is a week to long for Sorentto? Also has anyone every stayed at the Sorrento City Hotel? I am looking for a place to stay in Sorrento and Rome and am open to suggestions. Barbara

There have been two threads on the Helpline in the past, one very recently, praising the Sorrento City Hotel. I will stay there next time I'm in Sorrento. We've been to Sorrento 3 times in the past 6 yrs and stayed a week each time. I don't think a week is too long at all. It's my favorite place in Italy. There is so much to do and see, if you want. It's also a great place to do very little. Just walking around town, going in shops, sitting at outdoor restaurants / cafes is very, very enjoyable for me. It is a very relaxing, very friendly, very beautiful place. It's so easy to get anywhere from Sorrento... the Circumvesuviana train to Naples, Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Mt. Vesuvius (although you need to take an add'l bus or taxi) is steps from Sorrento City Hotel. Then there are boats and ferries to Naples, Capri, Positano, Amalfi, etc. - very fun. Then there's the SITA bus along the Amalfi coast that stops steps from SC hotel. And finally, the Hop-On Hop-Off bus which is also very enjoyable. We've always stayed at La Tonnarella and love it, but SC Hotel is less expensive and looks great. I think a week in Sorrento is perfect! Enjoy!

If you have a week in the Amalfi Coast area, consider going a little further south to Paestum - ancient Greek temples, good museum, beach, and mozzarella from buffalo milk is made at several places in the area. You can get there by train, or drive - many hotels have parking.

We stayed at the hotel La Pace outside Sorrento. Since it was part of a tour package, I'm not sure what the normal nightly rates are, but it was quite a place. if you like marquetry products, check out the Lucky Store. Amazing products. They shipped everything home for use. No problems with customs, breakage or anything. Along the Amalfi Coast, be sure to stop for 1/2 a day at least in Positano. It's easy to drive pass it because you don't see much from the road, but it's well worth a visit down to the beach area.

Hi Barb We stayed for week in Hotel Sorrento City two years ago and found it to be perfect as a home base. Its clean, great staff, and is only a few blocks away from train and bus station(but not in a BAD way). We had a room in the front with a little balcony and enjoyed sitting out and watching street scene, but if you are noise senstive you may want to request a room in the back. I encourage you to stay there and enjoy Sorrento and the ease of day trips from that location. We took buses to Amalfi, trains to Pompei, and boats to Capri and Naples. What could be better? Enjoy Mike
