Sorrento, Capri, Positano, Pompeii

Coming from Rome, what would be the best way to spend a couple of days between Sorrento, Capri, Positano and Pompeii? Afterwards we are going up North to Assisi, Florence, Bologna and Venice. Thanks.

carol,

I'd suggest basing in Sorrento and taking day trips to the other locations.

  • Capri - about an hour each way by boat
  • Positano - about an hour each way by bus or you could use a taxi or private car service.
  • Pompeii - about 40 minutes each way via Circumvesuviana train.

If you wanted to compress two places into one day, you could arrange an early departure to Positano, spend a few hours looking around there, Ferry to Capri and then return on the last boat to Sorrento. There are many possibilities.

Sorrento has the best connections to all those places. You can take a bus or ferry to Positano, ferry to Capri, and the train will get you to Pompeii in 30 minutes. Easy peasy.

Sorrento as a base, Capri one daytrip, Pompeii (maybe visit the Archeological Museum in Napoli) another day - you might fit Positano in if you skip Napoli, but Positano and Pompeii are in nearly opposite directions. Still, a morning in Pompeii and a late afternoon in Positano could work, even with public transportation. Just note the bus schedule from Positano to Sorrento.

Voting with all of the above: Sorrento is your best base for this itinerary as it's the main transport hub for all of these locations. Depending on time of year you intend to do this, Positano can be reached by ferry during the summer months - although very rough seas can cancel service - and by bus the rest of the year. Ferries go to Capri all year long. The train to Pompeii is indeed easy-peasy, as Angela said. I'd recommend at least three nights to cover all 4 locations.

If that's not possible, there is luggage storage at Pompeii so you could do that one en-route to Sorrento. Get an early start from Rome, spend the morning/early afternoon, and then go on to Sorrento for the balance of the day. Spend the next day split between Capri and Positano (although I think that's rushed) and then head out the next morning.

I agree on basing in Sorrento. I'll just add that imo Amalfi and Ravello are way more interesting than Positano, which is very heavy on shops catering to well-heeled tourists. Both Amalfi and Ravello have small, pretty cathedrals with collections of local historic objects. Ravello also has two beautiful villas with gorgeous gardens and stunning views.
