We've seen Rome, Florence, Venice, Lucca, Amalfi, Positano, and Pisa already. We're planning a trip to the Sorrento area (as seen in the topic) for May 2008. We only have 7 days. Will these places keep us busy or should try to cram in something else? We're fine taking the bus and trains.
I wouldn't try to cram more in. You have a lot of living to do in seven days! Ferries and bus schedules will take some time.
I have spent 2 weeks altogether in Sorrento, also 3 days on Ischia (island off Naples). I think this is a wonderful choice. In addition to places you named, Sorrento is a center for the Amalfi Coast (Amalfi, Positano, Ravello, Praino, etc). DO NOT MISS RAVELLO (bus there from Amalfi).. I love this area and there is plenty to keep you busy. There is a local train line (Circumvesuviana) to take you betweeen Naples and Sorrento, also goes to Pompeii (get off at Pompeii scavi). Sorrento is a center for buses to all parts of this area, and also ferries. Wish I could go with you!
I would agree with the other posts that there is plenty to see, do and enjoy in the Sorrento area. We enjoyed is as a more layed back version of Italy and we found it to be substantially cheaper than the Portofino area.
I wanted to thank you 3 for your suggestions. I just officially booked the trip for Tues May 13th thru Wed May 22nd. We'll do 6 nights in Sorrento, and do one night in Naples so we can take a 6:45am flight home. I definitely want to check out Ischia which I believe is accessible from Sorrento by ferry, and we might skip Amalfi & Positano since we've been there, and we'll make our way to Salerno and/or Ravello. Hopefully, we can access them via bus or rail. If anyone reads this reply that knows... Are those 2 easily accessible by rail or bus?
