Sorrento + Campania?

Hello, I am a student studying abroad in Florence and am looking for some advice pertaining to my spring break next week!
1. I will be staying in Sorrento for a few days, but I am planning on taking day trips to Pompeii and one other place. What would be a good day trip from Sorrento at this time of year? I read that Capri and Amalfi may be pretty empty, and we will already be visiting Napoli since that's where our train comes in.
2. How much time should we budget for Pompeii? Are Herculaneum or Mt Vesuvius worth it?
3. Also- any tips or recommendations relating to Sorrento are greatly appreciated. Thank you!

From Sorrento you need to allow the best part of the day to visit Pompeii (Rick allows three hours for his walking tour of the site). Take the train from Sorrento which will drop you at the main entrance to the site (Pompeii Scavi station). Be aware the site has only one not very good cafeteria near the baths. Better to take your food with you.

Pompeii gets all the visitors but I much prefer Herculaneum. It’s a smaller and more interesting site. You can get to it from Pompeii by train to Erculano Scavi station and then a bit od a walk to the site .again really lacks visitor facilities, when I was there about 10 years ago there were some vending machines and that was it. The site is small and compact with complete buildings, frescos and mosaics. May would take a couple of hours to do.

Vesuvius is very weather dependent. You need a clear day. Capri is also weather dependent, spring storms will see ferries cancelled.

Sorrento is a pleasant seaside resort. No beach but an interesting series of broadwalks allow for swimming and sunning, though not in March! A trip to Amalfi and Positano on a sunny day is nice. In Sorrento do visit the fishing port at the base of the cliffs…had a nice meal at Delphine’s (.?) with a stunning sunset over the Bay.

Hi Claire, and welcome to the forum.

If you could expand on the number of nights you are planning in this area, we would be better able to help you.

It looks like you will have 2-4 nights in Sorrento and are looking for an additional day trip from there excluding Pompeii.

Are you planning any nights in Naples?

What is your primary interest? Art, History or just relaxing and hanging out?

Temps during your time should be highs in the 60’s lows 50-55.
