Sorrento Boat Excursions

My friends and I are planning on taking a day trip from Rome to Sorrento in late August. Some of my friends want to stay and town while some of us really want to have a boat take us around the Amalfi coast/swim in the ocean. All the tours we’ve seen are usually 8+ hours long and start way too early. Would it be possible to find a boat on the day of (during the high season) around the ports/beaches or is this something that I need to book way in advance? If so, do you guys recommend any reputable companies?

You can probably find a boat on the day

But you do realize it will take you 3+ hours to get to Sorrento? That is driving direct, if you are taking the train add more for time to transfer etc
IMO that’s too far for a “ day trip” when you figure likely a total of 7 hours minimum travel round trip

We were planning on taking the fast train at 7AM (we’re staying right next to Termini Station). We arrive in Naples at 8:10AM. The next ferry from Naples to Sorrento is at 9AM, giving us time to walk from the train station to the port while also sightseeing just a bit. The ferry is another 40 minutes but in a way we would be able to see all the wonderful vistas along the coast. We would arrive in Sorrento at 10AM and plan on leaving around 7PM so that we could be back in Rome around 10PM.

It is kind of a long trip but we feel it’s worth it since we will be sightseeing along the way. Is there something else that maybe we should know about? Are the trains/ferry’s unreliable? I want to take in everyone’s advice and make this the best trip possible lol

I believe you are cutting it very close, and if anything goes wrong, you may miss your ferry to Sorrento. Naples is a beehive of activity with amazing and chaotic traffic. Walking direct from Napoli Centrale to the port area is a minimum 30 minute walk, not including sightseeing or getting lost.

Ferries won’t run if weather and sea conditions are lousy and I doubt you’ll make it to 9 am ferry unless you grab a cab from Centrale right to the port although even that timing is iffy due to traffic.

Would a private transfer from Naples to Sorrento fit your budget? We just did that for 95 euros
Or check all your other options- Circumvesuviana or Campania trains
