Sorrento B&B

Trying to decide between staying at one of the few luxury hotels along the water for a lot of money or staying at a quaint b&b near Piazza Tasso which is more in my price range. Is it possible to go to the luxury hotels and walk the grounds and/or have a meal or a drink if not staying at the hotel?

You can definitely go to the Bellevue Syrene for lunch or drinks and dinner. Staying there is even better!

Kathy, you are overthinking this thing. You will still experience Sorrento if you don't stay in a posh, 5-star hotel with a view. Our lovely hotel near the piazza (Antiche Mura) didn't have a view of the gulf but we got PLENTY of that from Villa Communale and other locations 'round about town. No, we didn't walk the grounds of any luxury hotels and didn't miss that at all. You'll be able to find a bar with a view for a drink if that's what you're looking for.

Hello Kathy
We were in Sorrento 2 years ago and had made reservations several (at least 7 months) in advance. The places that we wanted to stay were already booked, as Sorrento is a destination for many weddings and events. We ended up in Hotel Plaza, right by the piazza Tasso, which was more than we usually spend. The place was worth every euro! The windows were double panned/sound proof (there is always something happening in the square) the bed were extremely comfortable, the rooms were fabulous and the breakfast was unbelievable. Every item was fresh, delicious and all pastries were home made. The rooftop had an incredible view of the BON and there were live musicians there nightly. There was also a pool on the roof, but we never got a chance to use.

The pizza shop directly across the street had fabulous pies for 4 e each, so our lunches and dinners were very reasonable. There was also a fruit market next to the pizza place. Its definitely not a b&b, but well worth the price (it was approx 190 E per night).

Good luck!

Just another thing to consider? How much time are you actually going to spend at your accommodation versus be out and about sightseeing? If you are wanting to spend a fair amount of time just lounging by a pool, sunning on a terrace and otherwise sticking close to the property, then maybe springing for posh with all the amenities - including onsite restaurant - is worth the price.

But if you are going to be out most of of every day, don't care about a pool or spa, and want to sample a variety of Sorrento restaurants then a nice B&B will do. We all travel differently: my DH and I choose to stretch our $$ by avoiding luxury hotels with amenities we won't use as we generally spend most of our daylight hours away from our accommodation. We also don't travel with any dressy clothes so we don't need or want fancy on-site restaurants. Nice midrange hotels and inns in our desired town/city locations do the trick.

But you and your DH may have a different travel style so you should choose what pleases YOU. :O)

Another issue may be whether you need air conditioning. Do you understand that Sorrento is not particularly a beach town? Even the luxury hotels don't have beaches, they have private boardwalk swimming platforms at the bottom of the cliff, available only to guests. We go to bed early, so I might worry about street noise coming in the windows in some hotels.

Check out Marina Piccola 73. A botique hotel with only a dozen rooms. We are staying there for a week in Oct. At the waters edge in Marina Piccola. Suburb reviews on all travel sites. Very affordable.
