Hello,
First time Italy traveler. Flying into Naples, 3 night stay Sorrento area. Any suggestions on moderatly priced hotels in the area, preferably with a great sea view?
Also, will be going to Rome next for 3 night stay. Any suggestions on best mode of transport Sorrento ->Rome?
Thanks, Linda

Linda,

What is your criteria for "moderately priced"? A couple of hotels you could look at in Sorrento.....

  • Hotel Il Nido - located on a hill above the town with incredible views. They provide a frequent Shuttle for getting back and forth from the hotel - http://ilnido.it/
  • Hotel Desiree - on the far end of town but not a difficult walk. They also have great views of the Bay (not sure if every room has a view) - http://www.desireehotelsorrento.com/

What is your criteria for "best mode of transport" from Sorrento to Rome? The easiest transport will be to use a private car service from Sorrento to Napoli Centrale, and then high speed train to Roma Termini. The cheapest transport will be the Circumvesuviana commuter train from Sorrento to Napoli Centrale, and then high speed train. The Circuvesuviana has a bit of a reputation as a haven for pickpockets and scammers so it could be an interesting trip (which is why I mentioned the car service).

As this is your first trip to Italy, I would highly recommend packing along a copy of ths RS Italy guidebook as it has an enormous amount of information that will help your trip to go smoothly.

As this is your first trip, you'll need to be aware of the potentially expensive caveats when using trains and other public transit in Italy. If you need further information on those, post another note here.

Ken has given you some great advice.

Another hotel that we stayed at was Hotel Sietimo Cielo. http://www.hotelsettimocielo.com/en/ All the rooms have sea views. It is not fancy, but is is on the same Via Capo as the hotels Ken mentioned. There are several hotels along that road most of which would offer some sort of sea view because they are on a high cliff right along the water, and it is about a 10-15 minute walk into the main part of town from that area.
