Sorrento and Tuscany in 7 days

We are flying into FCO and directly heading to EITHER Sorrento OR Tuscany. (May 5-13)
We have a total of 7.5 days to visit those 2 place. We are not spending any time in Rome only flying into and out of.

We would like some advice on which direction to go first when arriving at FCO. We haven't made any hotel reservations yet.
Does it make sense to go North or South first from FCO? North to Florence/Tuscany or South to Naples/Sorrento?

Also any train advice or private transfer to get from airport to either place?

May is a transitional season, weather-wise, so I'd prefer to head south initially. However, transportation to Sorrento will probably be a bit trickier than to Florence, so that could be a consideration in a jetlagged/sleep-deprived state.

It is a very short amount of time to go both places. Personally, I would spend the week in one or the other.

If you must do both, go to Florence first by train directly from FCO. Some trains will require you to change trains at or take a taxi to Termini and a couple each day go to Florence without a change necessary. Research at www.Trenitalia.com. After your time there (I presume 3 nights in the city?) take a high-speed train to Naples. From there, to save time and hassle, get a private transfer to Sorrento. Depending on the time of your flight, you might have to go back to Rome the night before.

Alternatively, you can certainly go south first: Leonardo Express or taxi to Termini then high-speed train to Naples, private transfer to Sorrento. After a few nights there, transfer to Naples and take the train(s) to Florence. Again, you may have to go back to Rome for the last night depending on the time your flight leaves.

No matter which you pick, you are going to spend most of a day transferring between Florence and Sorrento.

Is the assumption you are leaving home on 5 May and arriving Rome 6 May and then departing 13 May correct? If so you have 6 full days for tourist stuff, and part of your arrival day.

If so I would pick only one destination as you are almost certainly going to need to spend your last night in Rome to assure yourself of making your return flight.

We will have 7.5 days to do both Tuscany and Sorrento.
We are arriving at FCO around 12:45 pm on May 5th. We will need to be back in Rome (just to spend the night) on the May 12th for a flight back home on May 13th at around 10:30 am. Any hotels near FCO someone might recommend for 1 night?
