Sorrento and/or Positano as a base? And Naples or not? Rome overnight (twice)

We are flying into Rome and spending one night there, then heading down to the Amalfi Coast. We want to visit Pompeii, but are leery about a visit to Naples. Should we:
1. Leave Rome, check into a hotel in Naples, visit Pompeii for an afternoon, have dinner in Naples, head to the archeological museum the next morning, and then continue down to the Amalfi Coast, or should we leave Rome, go straight down to Sorrento, and head to Pompeii the next day? My husband is afraid that we will not enjoy Naples because we will be extra-vigilant about being the target of petty thieves, so he's inclined to skip it, and head to Pompeii from Sorrento.

  1. We arrive in Rome on a Friday morning and leave Rome to head back to the States late in the day the following Wednesday. Should we base ourselves in Sorrento from Saturday through Tuesday, wander around Sorrento on Saturday afternoon, go to Pompeii on Sunday, take a boat to Amalfi and then go on to Positano on Monday (and heading back to Sorrento at night), and not sure what to do on Tuesday (open to suggestions), before heading back to Rome late on Tuesday, where we would spend one more night before heading home to the U.S.? Alternatively, should we only stay in Sorrento for a night or two and then stay elsewhere, e.g., Positano or Amalfi for another night?

  2. By the way, we've visited Rome before and stayed near Piazza Navona. We loved the neighborhood. Where in Rome would you recommend staying for two nights, one inbound and one before heading home? Would you choose Trastevere or the Centro Storico? We don't have a list of places that we feel we must see as we've spent time there before. I think we will mostly enjoying soaking in all that is Rome, drinking espresso and wine, and eating. Any recommendations appreciated.

  3. Any hotel and/or restaurant recommendations for any or all parts of this itinerary would be much appreciated as well. In Rome, over a decade ago, we loved L'Orso 80. Anyone been there recently? Any Sorrento favorites?

Many thanks!

Wear a money belt and you should be fine. We loved Sorrento and wish we had time for Naples. Seeing both Pompeii and the museum in Naples would be best best. Enjoy

There's no reason to freak out over Naples. Naples may be a bit gritty, but petty crime there is no different from any of the other places you seem to like. Heck, if you are New Yorkers, it'll feel a lot like home.

You should be vigilant about petty crime everywhere, not just Naples. Use a little common sense, go where you want, and don't be afraid of the place.

Travelite:

If you stayed near Piazza Navona and liked it, you might investigate Hotel Portoghesi, which is a "block" or two north of Piazza Navona. Perhaps you stayed there before.

I've stayed there twice before and will again in six weeks.

I'm spending eight days in Naples, with some day trips thrown in. I've never been to Napoli. It seems to be a tale of two cities — with some travelers loving it and others warning to stay away. I prefer to be positive; the culture and cuisine seem too inviting to pass on.

The Naples pickpocket warning is a bit overblown. You should be equally cautious in Rome or any other city. That said, you’d probably feel more comfortable staying in Sorrento. At a minimum, see the Archeological museum, it’s worth the effort.

On arrival in Rome head straight to Naples.
1 hr17min from Roma Termini.
I've spent about 6 weeks in the Naples/Sorrento area over the past 15 years. Have found the city to be exhilarating, a world heritage site, more things to do and see than most cities in Italy.
Wonderfully warm people proud of their ancient
heritage. Just use situational awareness and you'll be fine. Note: I'm 72 and have had no problems.

You could spend the night somewhere near the Archeological Museum, and visit the next morning. Then head to Sorrento, or visit Pompeii
On the way. There is left luggage both at the Pompeii Scavi stop and at the entrance by the main gate. Doing so gives you more time to explore Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast, using both the ferry and bus.

Edit: use the drop down menus for all transportation options.

My pocket has been picked in Rome, but not in Naples. Forget about these warnings. There are certainly more beggars in Philadelphia than there are in Naples .

Did you give the month of the year? Crowding is a huge factor in high season, and Sorrento and Positano book up six to nine months in advance. If you're going this summer, it is very late to get your fifth choice of hotel. Do you understand (Search box top center) how much more remote Positano is than Sorrento? That makes a big difference for daytrips and for going back to Rome. It is your decision whether your objective is beach sitting and dining, or daytrips.

How do you feel about leaving your luggage at the Naples train station and doing a day visit to the Archeological Museum before ending up in Sorrento for the rest of your plans? Split your valuables between you in money belts, wear your NYC moxie and then get on with things.

Thank you all so much for your input. After much back and forth, we've decided to skip Naples (though I agree with the people who pointed out that vigilance is the key, and not just in Naples).

We're arriving in Rome on a Friday morning, celebrating our wedding anniversary in Rome that night ( still haven't figured out dinner, if anyone has a recommendation--- a warm atmosphere and good pasta would make us happy- we may return to L'Orso 80, where we enjoyed a few great meals over a decade ago) . (We will likely stay in one of the two hotels that Suki and Sam have recommended.). We're heading to Sorrento and using that as our base from Saturday night though Tuesday day), and I appreciate the restaurant recommendations that Suki has given. We'll explore Sorrento on Saturday afternoon. We'll spend Sunday in Pompeii. On Monday, we'll take the ferry to Amalfi and Positano, and eat lunch at Bruno in Positano. We haven't figure out Tuesday yet, but we may go to Capri. (Any other suggestions for Tuesday are welcome.) Then, it's back to Rome on Tuesday night for dinner and an overnight. We catch our flight back to NYC late in the day on Tuesday.

Again, we really appreciate your helpful suggestions! Grazie!
