I am interested in advice about a home-base for the Amalfi coast. My two must- dos are to hike the Path of the Gods and go to Pompeii. Will the Path of the Gods hike be doable as a day trip from Sorrento, or should I stay elsewhere? How long does the hike take? My husband and I are arriving from Rome on 9/01 and will take a train to Florence on 9/04. We are athletic and avid hikers. Thanks!
It's only about six miles. A couple of hours? Three max. I double-walked it and had a beer in a bit over four.
If you can get hold of this highly regarded walking guide to the several walks, including the Path of the Gods, in the area. It gives info on timings, grades the walks, picnic spots and has advice on public transport to and from etc etc. http://www.sunflowerbooks.co.uk/product/walking-in-sorrento-the-amalfi-coast-and-capri/
Though I prefer Positano over, well, anywhere in the world, staying in Sorrento makes life a little easier. It is WAY easier to get to, and being slightly larger than most of the small coastal villages, you have more options for accommodations (both in price and style).
If you decide to stay in Sorrento (recommended) stay at Il Nido Hotel. Amazing views & reasonable with great free shuttle to town & train station & good restaurant too. See reviews on Trip Advisor.
We just did that hike today. The length of time is dictated by where you decide to start and stop. We walked from Agerola to Montepertuso and then took the bus back to our hotel in Positano. Others start or finish in Nocelle, or walk from there down the steps to Positano. But, the length of time on the hike is less of the issue than how you will get there. If you take the sita bus, you may have to take two and there is the wait between. Edit: and you probably also have to take into account that you may not get on the bus you try to get on (it can be a battle as there aren't enough busses for all of the people).
