Sorrento and Adriatic side of Italy - too much territory?

We're planning a trip to Italy arriving and departing from Naples. On this first planning pass we'd like to stay in Lecce, Barletta, Vieste, Sorrento. But if visited in that order Naples to Lecce looks to be about 6 hours according to rome2rio and Vieste to Sorrento more than 7 hours. I'm trying to figure out a way where we don't spend two days of our vacation essentially moving point to point.

Is this a feasible set of destinations? In similar circumstances do people just figure it takes what it takes, or might there be a better order? Maybe adding another intermediate stop? I've tried a few variations but haven't come up with a great plan yet, I'm hoping someone familiar with the area might have suggestions or advice.

I've been to Puglia twice, but without a car, so I obviously have a high tolerance for sitting in vehicles. You've identified a key issue with a bi-coastal trip like this. I don't think I'm helping, but I really must mention Matera as a place you should research. It's in Basilicata, but the time to see it is when you're going to Puglia.

This is what I do when I'm in your situation...find more places that I must see. I don't know the middle of the peninsula in the south at all, but I have at least heard of Potenza. I Googled for photos, and it looks promising as a waystation. Perhaps someone else here has actually set foot in the town? The population's under 70,000.

This is a long shot, but if you could fly into Rome FCO and out of Napoli, this might work for you.

FCO-Brindisi flight 1H10m. ITA very inexpensive and you’ll be at the airport.
Rent car.

Brindisi- Lecce 40 min. Lecce to Barletta 2H24m

Barletta-Vieste 2H30m. Vieste-Bari or Trani 2H45m.

Bari (Trani) - Sorrento 4 hours.

Hope this helps, at least it breaks up the drive.

The best would be two separate trips: one for Sorrento and surrounds and another for Puglia. You might mention the length of time you have to work with.
