I will be in Italy alone and I would like to stay a few days around the Amalfi Coast and was thinking about staying in Sorrento. Can anyone offer any suggestions as to whether Sorrento is relatively safe in the evening? Or would staying somewhere such as Positano be safer? Thank you.
Sofia, I often travel solo and I've found Sorrento to be perfectly safe in the evenings. That's a great "home base" for touring the Amalfi coast and visiting Pompeii. Happy travels!
Sofia, to add a woman's perspective, I've been to Amalfi solo and Positano, I prefer Positano. Perfectly safe.
Italy as a whole is safe in the evening, for a very simple reason: they eat dinner later than we do. Thus, everyone in town is going to dinner at 8 or 8:30 PM, and spending several hours at dinner, then going home. Only after everyone goes home is there even a question of streets being "deserted" or of "the wrong element" being out without lots of other people around. Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast towns are small towns; like small towns everywhere, they have low crime rates. Naples has dodgy areas, but even there, if you go where locals are going in the evening, you won't have any problems. And in Rome, after dinner all the Romans are walking around the center - and so should you, as it's all lit up and absolutely beautiful.
Sorrento is very safe day and night. Love Sorrento, our favorite place in Italy.
Thank you very much for your replies...feel much better now about traveling solo to Sorrento.
