Sorrento after Sicily questions

Hi my wife and I are doing the 11 day RS Sicily Tour. We would like to go to Sorrento after this for a 4 day rest and visit. Should we fly from Catania to Naples and hire a driver/taxi to Sorrento or has anyone taken the train from Catania to Naples. Is 4 days in Sorrento sufficient. Any feedback would be welcome. Thanks Fred W

We traveled from Palermo via the overnight ferry, landing in Naples in the AM. From there we took the fast ferry to Sorrento. it was a great way to see the coast line! Not sure about a ferry from Catania...

That said, we enjoyed 4 nights in Sorrento. One of the days we took a bus day tour to Mt Vesuvius/Pompeii, then enjoyed a full day in Sorrento, just relaxing. Next day we took the fast ferry from Sorrento to Amalfi and walked the 1,000 stairs to Ravello.

Not sure this answers your question, but thought I'd share our experience.

We are returning to Sicily in Sept this year for another self guided bike tour, and we end in Taormina. I've rented an AirBNB for 4 nights, we plan to just relax...and most likely take a tour of Mt Etna, then enjoy some beach time before returning to Catania for the return flight home.

Hi, Fred:

You're in for a treat.

We did this back when the Sicily tour ended in Palermo. We flew from Palermo to Naples, then took the Circumvesuviana to Sorrento. We spent 5 or 6 days in Sorrento, which included a day trip to Naples, and another to Pompeii. The rest of the time we just enjoyed Sorrento.

Following with interest. We had planned on doing the same thing next year, but decided 3 or 4 days in Sorrento wouldn't be enough and and decided on a few days in Rome instead since we'd already been there and wouldn't need longer. Since that decision though, we've decided to pass on Sicily until RS eliminates testing restrictions, and are planning 2 full weeks in Sorrento in June/23. Probably more than we need, but our list of want-to-dos was definitely longer than 4 days.

fwalshe, the blue Search box top center will reveal hundreds of discussions of ways to get to Sorrento and what you might do while there. It doesn't always come up so I'll mention that is difficult to impossible to fly home from Rome on a day that you wake up in Sorrento. It might possible if your plane is after 2-3 PM, but there is still considerable risk. This is, after all ... ... southern ... Italy. And it's at least a three-seat ride. (Even if money were no object, because the airport is north of (on the other side of) Rome, I wouldn't take a black car from Sorrento to FCO.) Another key issue is advance purchase, non-refundable, non-changeable discount fares for the VERY fast train option from Naples to Rome.

We just got back from Italy and spent 4 nights in Sorrento. We had a driver from Rome, a quick stop in Naples (if there is such a thing as a "quick" stop in Naples!) and then to our hotel in Sorrento. We stayed at the Hotel Bristol which is uphill from the train station, we were glad we didn't have to walk it with our luggage (or I guess take a taxi). The next day we took the train to Pompeii and had plenty of time to explore Sorrento that afternoon and evening. The next day we had a driver to take us to the Amalfi Coast, first a stop in Ravello for a couple of hours, then he dropped us in Positano for our lunch reservations - we took the ferry back to Sorrento where we had dinner and again enjoyed Sorrento at night. Then the final day, we took a boat tour to Capri, were back in time to take our guide's advice and had a fish dinner at the Marina Grande - so delicious!!! It sounds like 3 very busy days, but we had time to rest at the hotel pool in the afternoon, and explore Sorrento in the evenings. Four nights for us was plenty of time for us and we were ready to move on to Tuscany! Have a wonderful trip!
