In June we stayed for 4 nights at the Hotel Minerva. It is located a very short bus ride up the road away from the crowds of Sorrento. We were thrilled with it. We had a fabulous view from our terrace of the bay and Mt Vesuvius. The staff is outstanding. Very helpful. We hope we can return there again someday. You can check them out on www.hotelminervasorrento.com. They are in Rick's book. They do offer "Rick" rates so ask for them at time of inquiry.

Check out La Tonnarella. The location is great, and the views are not to be believed. It also has a private beach, which we thoroughly enjoyed. Wonderful place!

This June we stayed at Settimo Cielo ( see Rick's Book) which is right across the street from the Minerva (stayed there 2004). We had a beautiful view and balcony with good bathroom and bed for 153 euros for three people with the 10% cash discount. You can also get a 5% with Rick's book. Nice pool and ask for a frig. Professional and helpful front desk and very good with emails. Very nice. try info@hotelsettimocielo.com.

No problem, Paddy. La Tonnarella is situated on Via Capo, a road that rises from Sorrento's town center along the coast. The result is a glorious location, perched on the cliff, overlooking the sea, with access to the hotel's private (actually, shared with one other hotel) beach.

We arrived at La Tonnarella with our rental minivan (and, they have free parking - another plus for us). We were able to leisurely walk to the town center in 10-15 minutes, plus another 5-10 down (several flights of stairs) to the actual port (ferry access to various places).

If you're not up to walking, there is a bus that passes right by the hotel as well.

There really aren't shops (at least, that we noticed) close to the hotel. It's primarily a strip of hotels.

We absolutely adored La Tonnarella. However, from Tripadvisor reviews that I have read, some rooms are nicer than others. Some reviews mention some hideously painted rooms that were not nearly as nice as others. So, I would recommend getting the specifics of your room before committing. We stayed in Room 25, which is a magnificent suite. But, it only makes sense if you have a group - in our case, us and our 3 kids.

I hope that it works out for you. It is truly a glorious place!

WE stayed outside Sorrento in Massa Lubrense...
http://www.francischiello.it/
The hotel was wonderful and the staff can't be beat.

The restaruant was so good we ate there every night!!!

the rooms all have balconies with a beautiful view of Capri...

Massa Lubrense is about 10 minutes out of Sorrento - toward the tip of the penninsula. Hotel Bellavista has a bus stop right out front and they sell tickets. The family/owners/staff have also been known to take guests into Sorrento.

Last October we arrived in Sorrento without a reservation as we had not been successful prior to our arrival. We checked out the various RS recommendations and all were full. We visited the TI and explained our situation and they made a call to the owner/landlord (Andrea) of the Villa Terrazza on the cliff just above the marina where the hydrofoils that travel the Amalfi Coast dock. There are suites as well as a single room there that we were able to rent for three nights, Normally, they rent them by the week. It was an incredible experience to sit on the terrace overlooking the bay, Mt Vesuvius, cruise ships while enjoying a glass of wine every evening before we went out to dinner. Short walk to the train station and center of town. We would return there in a heartbeat. www.villaterraza.com
