Sorrento

Just left there after 3 days, and it is much more commercialized then when we visited 3 years' ago. On the weekend, I think every teenager in Italy was there to see and be seen. No problems just can' imagian what it will be like in the summer! I hope they plan to close the streets if it is more crowded then it was last weekend.

We have taken holidays in Sorrento in Spring and/or Autumn for the last 30 years so you can imagine the changes we have seen. It does depend on the time of year. We are here now, a month earlier than usual, and are finding it quite laid back. The local people seem more relaxed (have yet to face the hordes of summer visitors) and have more time to shoot the breeze. The biggest difference we have noticed over the years (apart from the fact that milk is no longer delivered to hotels in open pails!) is the huge increase in the number of cruise ship visitors. One day last October there were 3 moored offshore! Also how crowded and uncomfortable the bus services have become even in the so called quieter months. The recent scaling back of ferry services has not helped either. The weekends are always busier throughout most of the year, it is a popular destination for people from the Naples area as well as other parts of Italy. There are ongoing discussions about extending the pedestrianised areas during the busiest periods.
