Does anyone know if the beaches are within an easy walking distance? I've traveled to Positano before and would never stay far from the beach since it's quite the work out to get to them. I'm just wondering if it's the same if I were to stay in Sorrento.
Sorrento is built along the top of cliffs so the way to the beach is down! The majority of "beaches" are bathing establishments with decks over the water and chairs, umbrellas, changing rooms, WCs and usually some sort of catering. As is the case with the rest of Italy you have to pay for the facilities. There are some free areas of actual beach but unfortunately they are limited in size, pebbly and often scruffy because no one looks after them. Most of the cliff top hotels in the town have their own private estabishments with lifts/elevators down to them. Here is the site of a place located at the ferry harbour. There is a bus service to and from the town centre. http://www.marameobeach.com/english/spiaggia.htm There are places to stay down there if it is really important to you to be at sea level.
I agree with Linda. I was going to say its not so much the horizontal distance as the vertical. She gave a good answer.
Dee, If you were to stay in Sorrento, the ease of access to the beach could depend on where you stay. Have a look at This Website for one example of a Hotel that provides some beach access. There's another Hotel next door (La Tonnarella) that shares the same beach, as I recall. Happy travels!
It's all downhill baby and the walk up is a killer.
