Is there a direct rail/bus to Sorrento from Rome? If not, would we go to Naples and then is there some other form of transportation to take to Sorrento?

At the Naples train station go downstairs to the Circumvesuviana which is the train that will take you to Sorrento. The other option is to take a ferry to Sorrento. Either way you have to go to Naples.

Sandy - The train to Napoli is easy - Then please take the hydrofoil to Sorrento - Beautiful as you come into the port area!!!
