Sorento or Positano?

Which is the best place to stay? We are going to Pompeii, Ravello and Capri. Going in early Oct. Help!

Sorrento is more convenient to Capri and Pompeii, Positano is closer to Ravello.

A vote for Sorrento. There are more varied and frequent types of transport around the area than from most other locations around the coast, although as Zoe has noted, some places are geographically closer to each other than others.

I agree with Kathy. We stayed in Positano for a week and it was hard to get around unless you hired a car or boat. Sorento has lots to offer and is easier. Take in Herculaneum if you are going to Pompeii, a well preserved city, somethings better than Pompeii.

Thank you for the info. I was just looking into location and wasn't aware it was that difficult to get around in Positano.

Shelly, other than Sorrento and Salerno there's no train service to the more-visited places on the Sorrentine/Amalfi Coasts. The ferries can't always be counted on for Positano as they have trouble docking there on windy/stormy days when the sea is rough. There are no ferries to Ravello: you need to get there by bus as it's inland.

Ferry service can almost aways be counted on from Sorrento to Capri but the grotto (you mentioned wanting to do that in another post) is also a crapshoot depending on weather and activity of the sea. There are plenty of other things to do if that doesn't play out, though. We chose to skip it entirely to avoid the crowd, and had a great time just exploring the island.

We went in early October as well on that trip, and stayed in Capri (town) for two nights.

Thank you Kathy. Good to know about the rough seas. I think I've figured out transportation. Thank goodness for the help of this forum.

You should also consider a day trip to Naples if you are in Sorrento. Sadly underrated by many.
