I posted recently about whether you can get a senior fare on Trenitalia.
For some reason the thread was closed down.
I joined cartafreccia and contrary to what someone posted as a reply it's a free program.
There's no fee.
Still trying to figure out if I can indeed get a senior rate.
Calling trenitalia to ask about this is a waste of time,they never pick up.

I signed up the senior rate/card for free several years ago. At that time it couldn’t be done online you had to fill out a form,scan it, then email it. It worked at that time. I was recently in Italy and using the same card/same number I was no longer offered the senior discount as a choice. I wasn’t traveling extensively enough to follow up on whether my card expired, discounts expired, etc. I just bought tickets and went on my way.

you have to be over 60 to get the senior discount and then the ticket has to be bought in advance...

I've done the same and am attempting to use similar discount codes on my bookings. What I've learned is that some trips will have discounted ticket options (like FRECCIAFAMILY, FRECCIAFRIENDS, FRECCIADAYS) available under SELECT SERVICE AND OFFER when you chose a trip, but the trips I'm trying to book do not. I have not been able to successfully add a coupon code at any step in the process.
You might want to try entering the FrecciaSENIOR discount code in your booking. Try it with random trips. It could be that the senior discount for the trip you want has already been taken.
Also, try Italo. You might have better luck getting a discounted ticket there. I'm having the same trouble accessing discounted tickets on that site as well.
