Solo Trip To Rome Mid/Late 20's Girl

Hi there,

I'm planning a trip to Italy Early November for 10-11 days. I'm staying with family up in Trento for 5 days( where I have been before and surrounding areas) and then taking a train down to Rome to venture on my own for the last 4-5 days for the first time. I'm just looking for suggestions to do in Rome while I'm there that aren't necessarily "sight-seeing".

I'm staying at the Albergo Cesari hotel, so I'm pretty central. I'd love suggestions on any casual must sees/try, restaurants, bars/lounges that have people my age. Any food/wine day tours that cater to singles. Really anything!

Thank you in advance! I look forward to hearing what people say.

If you like cats, you should go to the Largo Argentina. It's a beautiful archaeological site (where Julius Caesar was murdered, so they say) but nowadays is also a cat sanctuary. You can go downstairs to the cat sanctuary headquarters and visit with some of the cats (and maybe leave a donation to help them out) or just view the site, where many of the cats will be visible. Either way, it's a place I always stop at nearly daily on my annual trips to Rome.

I enjoyed wandering around the Protestant Cemetery (Cimitero Accatolico) in Testaccio. It also had cats. Many famous people are buried there and it's extremely peaceful even during peak season.

I love wandering around the center without an itinerary, just going down any small street I see, and going into every church - they're all different, and most were empty or nearly so.

I was in Rome for a few days solo this past summer and one night, I took the "Twilight Trastevere Tour". During my pre-Rome itinerary, I met a couple who raved about the tour.

My eyes widened at the price but this couple was so insistent that I booked it. The tour was excellent! We learned a lot about the history of the area and specific buildings in addition to eating and drinking. I left full and the tour did include some wine and beer. The tour was mostly Americans my age or younger (I am mid 30s). I was the only single. I intentionally booked one of the early evening tours and it was nice to have company for dinner after eating a lone for awhile. By the time the tour ended, the neighborhood was very lively with the evening crowd and a few of us did go out for another drink.

Bar del Fico, in the medieval quarter near Piazza Navona, gets a lively (but not rowdy) crowd of younger people in the evening. It's predominately locals, and the vibe is friends out for drinks together. There are numerous bars in Trastevere patronized by people your age. Just walk around and pick one you like. There are also some bars on Campo dei Fiori, but they always strike me attracting a slightly rowdier crowd.

In Rome, eat your pizza with a knife and fork or you will look like a heathen to the younger judgier Italian crowd ( I know this from experience - whoops!) Testacchio district is where the night life is and San Lorenzo is where the students are. I would definitely get thee to a bar when a game is on. Actually, right near the Pantheon, there is a pretty big friendly restaurant that's very touristed but staffed by mostly younger types - Miscellanea. See any Rick Steves guide for more info. The pizza is good there!

You might really enjoy strolling through Trastevere. If you want a challenge, take a bus or walk your way up the hill to see Il Tempietto, a tiny domed masterpiece sitting in the courtyard of a church at the top of the hill. Check opening hours and maybe get your hotel desk to help you call to confirm.
