Solo Travel to Sicily

I’m hoping to head to Sicily in June. I’ll have 8 night and will travel by train around Sicily. I’d like a relaxed time but don’t mind a minimum of 2 nights in one of the stops. Most of my holidays see me packing in a bit too much :). This time, I’d love to slow down a bit.

I can fly into either of the main airports.

Would 2 nights in Ortega and 6 in Cefalu be good? Should I go to Palermo?

Do those towns/cities feel relative safe?

Would mid-June be good for some sea swims?

Has anyone taken in an Opera in the amphitheatre (in Palermo?).

Thanks for any advice. I’d rather have humans help me than AI.

If you have 8 nights and are traveling by trains, personally, I’d stick with staying in one town and sticking with either the north coast (Palermo) or the east (Ortigya). All are safe. Disregard any old stereotypical tropes about Sicily especially regarding Palermo which is very safe, beautiful and clean, even cleaner than Barcelona, which is saying a lot. Mid June the water should be more than warm enough for swimming. I would not use AI to even plan a trip to the grocery store as I NEVER use it whatsoever and would never use it to plan a trip. What else are you planning to see/visit? Churches? Other towns? Many of the towns are close together and buses can be used as well. The trains in Sicily aren’t the fastest nor are they reliable for being on time so there’s that to consider as well.

 Slowing down on that trip means maybe 1-2 bases
 If you want to primarily spend vacation at the beach Cefalu sounds fine as a base, I'd probably be bored but I'm not a beach person.
 Ortigia is nice for a couple of days. The problem is the two are not really good fits as they're on opposite sides of Sicily.
 Yeah, very safe.
 Water both places should be "refreshing" but not cold.
 Personally, just a tour rather than a performance. Check the schedule.

I'd try to pick someplace close-ish to pair with Palermo, so even pairing Palermo 5 with Cefalu 3 make sense. What about Palermo 4 + Favignana 3 + Palermo 1?

We stayed in Ortigia and Cefalu in May. We enjoyed both, but we are beach people. At that time, the water was too cold for us, but mid-June should be fine. We had a car and found the trip interesting as we cut across the island. If you are going to rely on a train, perhaps flying into Palermo and out for Catania might work. You could do 3-4 nights in Palermo and then a night or two in Cefalu then wrap up in Taorimina or Catania. Another option could be a driver/private transfer if trains are less convenient.

I just assumed they're talking about Teatro Massimo. Yes, it's not outdoors.

Eight nights is kind of tough, but you can do it ok. If you want to include Ortigia, I’d fly into Catania and out of Palermo. Number of nights I’d think 3 Ortigia - 2 Cefalu - 3 Palermo. I’d really only include Cefalu nights if you want a beach day, otherwise it’s an easy enough day trip from Palermo.

There’s a case to be made for sticking to one side of Sicily with eight nights, sticking with Palermo/Cefalu/Trapani or Ortigia/Catania/Taormina.

Sicily is safe. Palermo is safe. Staying in Palermo city center is reasonable and Palermo is freaking rad. Don’t skip it. June is out of season for opera, though you may find an odd performance. I caught one in Ortigia’s fine opera house. Lovely building but subpar performance.

Bus is the primary people mover in Sicily, and you should choose it over train just about everywhere. The train system here just doesn’t compare to other Western Europe systems: Rough terrain, lack of investment, lack of demand. There’s a few good lines (Palermo to the airport and to Cefalu) but others (Ortigia to Noto) can be positively stone-age. If you can arrange it, a tour group transfer or private driver might get you across the island and include a visit to Villa Romana or Valler of the Temples. This would be a worthwhile splurge if you can find something like that. Renting a car for a day or two really changes the equation and is worth considering.

I’m blown away by the generous and thoughtful responses! This was my first time posting here and like I said, “Wow!”.

You have all given me so much to think about and new towns to research. I’m actually now drawn to the idea of staying on one side of the island.

Perhaps it wouldn’t be so bad to not visit Ortigia. But it does look quite interesting.

Yes - I had Teatro Massimo in mind and had thought it was outdoors. It looks as though I’ll be missing performances there so will try to catch something in Florence or Bologna.

Thank you again. I’ll be back with follow-up questions! ☀️
