solo in milan-safe area?

Hi. I will be staying in Milan in Oct for 2 nights. I am training to Verona and also seeing Duomo and Milan sights, then departing MXP. I have only stayed near central station and taken MXP bus the next AM. I see that there is now a MXP express train, so I have more options. I need somewhere with convenient train connections to Verona and also to MXP. I likely will be returning from Verona around dark, so looking for safe area to walk to hotel. Suggestions?

Trains to Verona depart from Milano Centrale.
The Malpensa Express departs from Milano Centrale or Milano Cadorna. The latter is closer to the Duomo and faster Malpensa Express trains.
The city center of Milan is generally very safe.

We were in Milan second week of September. We only hit two areas, the famous historic center and the Expo and environs. Both felt very safe. Milan is hosting the Expo this year and has cleaned itself up and beefed up security all over. If you're ever in doubt, there are information and tourist booths at every Metro station. Look for the Expo signs. They're very helpful.

If you are looking for a hotel near the train station in a safe area, I found the Hotel Windsor Milano to be in a very safe area. It is about a 10 minute walk down the main street from the train station. It is not inexpensive. You might want to access their website for details.

As you're going to be taking day trips by rail, being near Milano Centrale will be the most convenient location. One possibility you could have a look at is Hotel Garda, which is only about a five minute walk (once you know the way). For visiting the sights in Milan, just walk to the station and use the Metro to get around. If you're going to be using the Metro a lot, I'd suggest a day ticket.

The Malpensa Express has frequent departures from Milano Centrale to MXP. BE SURE to validate your ticket prior to boarding on the day of travel, or you'll risk hefty fines. One other point to note is that security gates have been installed at Milano Centrale between the front of the station and the back, where the tracks are located. You'll need to show your ticket to gain access to the platforms.

I stay in Milano frequently, at one of the hotels near Milano Centrale. I have always felt safe there. Hotel Garda or Hotel Berna are near the station (maybe five minutes' walk).

Hi Elaine, I have traveled solo in Milan and I stayed at the Hotel Berna near Milano Centrale. Took a stroll before dinner and felt very safe.
