Solo Day Trip to Ostia Antica

Is it safe for a woman to take a day trip to Ostia Antica from Rome solo? Or should I go with a group tour?

I went there by myself from Rome Termini station in late April, 2017. It felt entirely safe to me; in fact after you get outside of the densest part of Rome, it feels suburban and calm. If you are going in the off-season or at off time of day, you might want to look at a map of how to walk from the train station at Ostia Antica to the actual site; it's only a couple of blocks or so, and I followed the crowd. But if there had been no crowd, I might have felt a little uncomfortable.

I am very safety conscious, and I would feel comfortable going to Ostia Antica from central Rome and exploring it. We arrived mid-morning, and there were usually a few people in sight of where we were as we explored.

I did it myself in 2015, at which point I was a 64-year-old female. Not a problem at all.

I did a day there on my own as a single woman in Dec. 2017. Not a problem at all. I felt totally safe at Ostia and on commuter train. Took normal precautions against pickpockets on subway to Pyramide.

Adding to other comments. I went as part of an RS tour and enjoyed the site so much that I stayed on the whole afternoon to further explore it as it had long been on my bucket list. In early October it was very quiet - some archaeologists working in the forum area and a few visitors. The walk to the site was fine and I had no qualms about the walk back when returning to the station by myself. In fact other members of the group were more concerned about me being by myself than I was!

Ostia Antica is perfectly safe. So is Rome, but you will feel more comfortable in Ostia Antiqua. It's largely empty but for tour groups. By all means go solo unless you really want added interpretation of the sight.

another yes vote from a 60+ year old solo traveler. I thought the food in their café was good as well.

Take the RS Rome section on Ostia Antica if you do go solo. We did it on our own and learned lots from the book.

Yes it's safe. I recommend a group tour first for the information on the site. These guides have spent years perfecting their tours and you've come a long way. Then you can go back solo if you'd like and just hang out. You'll be a lot more oriented, focused, and in command of the area. The issue is how to get the most out of a situation.
