Can a family catch a soccer game to attend in the Lucca area? Do you have any other options to suggest, as we will be staying in the Varenna and Sorrento areas? Our time in Rome is quite busy.
It depends on the dates you are there.
Here are the dates: 6/8 to 6/22/26. Thank you for suggesting the dates, very important.
Not at that time of year. The football season is over. You’re there during the World Cup but unbelievably Italy didn’t qualify so you can’t even watch them on TV.
but unbelievably Italy didn’t qualify
It is very believable given the quality of Italian football atm (and since they last qualified in 2014, when they finished 22nd).
But no, the football you will be watching will be televised from Mexico, Canada, and Murica.
No soccer in June, except for maybe some local amatorial tournaments. All Italian teams will be on vacation before the training season starts in July.
June/July will be mostly concerts' and shows' season and Lucca is a major venue with their summer festival. Unfortunately you just missed David Byrne of the Talking Heads, in Lucca on June 25. Kati Perry will be there in July, while the Deep Purple will be in Pisa also in July.
Are there any suggested activities and/or sites for my grand to see and experience during our stay? He loves playing soccer and the entire experience.
The soccer stadium is just outside one of the gates in Lucca, but I have no idea what off season access might be. Teams sometimes have access to locker and trophy rooms and facilities, but I don't know how exciting he would find these things.
In nearby Prato they appear to have soccer summer camps for kids during this time but these are week long camps like in America.

Nearby-ish are Pistoia and Prato with local clubs and maybe places to find events or openings in the off season. Florence has a soccer museum but I haven't been.
Good luck,
