I know it will probably be different in many places, but, do small hotels typically supply soap/shampoo? or, will we really need to bring our own?
We found both supplied in every place we stayed in Italy. However, you might want to pack a small hotel-bar yourself and a 2 oz shampoo you like, just in case. If you like to have a wash cloth, pack it along. Rick Steves sells a nice microfibre one.
Yes to soap, not always shampoo. Be sure to put it in your checked bags or in small amount or the TSA will take shampoo from you. We also take washcloth with us as not always supplied.
We travel with bar shampoo from LUSH. You can get a small aluminum case for it. Really lathers up nicely, and it can double as soap if you're in a place that doesn't supply it. - no TSA worries either.
We always bring a bar of good old American soap. Those little soaps the hotels give you just can't compare.
I was in Italy last month - not for the first time, but I did notice that less soap/shampoo was provided at the two star hotels that I generally stay at. BYO unless you are staying at more upscale hotels.
Soap is always provided. Shampoo sometimes not or what is provided is all-inclusive body wash. So it's best to bring some travel-sized shampoo with you. FYI - washclothes are rarely provided.
