Snow, summer and driving - Cortina to Fedaia/Punta Rocca

Hello! I planned to drive from Cortina D’Ampezzo to Fedaia Pass and back. The weather forecast shows it might rain on friday and snow on saturday (aug 29-30) near Sottoguda and Punta Rocca, with temperatures during the day getting near or even under 0°C.

So, is it possible to have ice on the road (SP 641) and if I drive there, should the car be with winter tires or chains? Or is it safe to drive with regular tires and no chains?

Original plan was to go there on saturday (aug 30), but starting to reconsider.

Passo Fedaia is at 2057 mt (6750 ft) above sea level, so snow is possible even in August. I've been in that area in late May and it came down copiously. It's hard to say if and how much it will snow this weekend, it might be just a little bit that doesn't even stick to the ground or just a few inches. Nobody can really say. But unless you have an SUV it doesn't get much to get a regular car stuck in the snow (or start spinning at a curve) if you don't have chains or snow tires. Punta Rocca is the top of the Marmolada, and there is no way you can drive up there.

Well, the car is a Citroen C4X, so not the ideal… and about Punta Rocca, didn’t know it was the top.

But “Sottoguda” also shown possible snow (forecast keeps changing): theoreticaly, would it be possible to have ice on the road/too risky to drive on SP 641? I mean, if it starts pouring snow, I can see, stop, wait, etc., or is ot possible that suddenly the road has ice and it get dangerius without notice?

I am afraid you are confusing the meteo for the Fedaia pass with the meteo for the top of the mountain; there is a 1300 m elevation difference between them. While tomorrow it could really snow on the top of mountain, at lower elevation you are likely to find rain. My meteo for the Fedaia pass tomorrow (well, already today in our time zone) is temperature between 9 and 13 °C, well over the freezing point. I am close enough (writing from Innsbruck) to guess, even without reading the meteo, that on Friday the main danger is rain.
