Our tour ends north of Rome in Canale Monterano. We have seen Rome and have three days and would prefer smaller towns or areas to explore and possibly into the Lake Bracciano region. Does anyone have recommendations? Thank you.

Bracciano is a quaint town on top of the crater with a beautiful castle. Tom Cruise got married there.
While there you could visit the other pretty town on the lake, Anguillara Abbazia.
Down at the lake level there is the National Italian Air Force Museum. I’ve never visited it but a former colleague from So.Cal., whose husband is a pilot both visited it and were impressed.
On the south side of Rome are the Castelli Romani (Castel Gandolfo, Frascati, Ariccia) near lake Albano. Castel Gandolfo is where the Pope spends his vacations.

Yes, Bracciano is worth visiting and it's castle is one of the best. Not far away is the Palazzo Farnese located in Caprarola (province of Viterbo) it is open every day (except on Mondays) and is spectacular. (Not to be confused with the Palazzo Farnese in Rome).

Frascati is quite small and cute, you could do a wine tour in the countryside there if that's of interest (look at Old Frascati Food & Wine). Favorite spot for lunch there is Osteria dell'Olmo.
