Working on places to stay for trip in October. Would like to spend a few nights N of Florence like the Mugello(sp?). Also considering some place near Pisa (other than Lucca) for one or two nights as we will be flying out of there. Prefer small towns or agriturismos. Suggestions appreciated.

Try Pistoia. It's a 20 minute train ride NW of Florence. A town of about 80,000 with an intact old walled town area.
