We will be staying a week in Assisi and are looking for suggestions of interesting less touristy within 30 kilometers of Assisi. I would appreciate any suggestions.
Roger: It sounds as if you're sleeping in Assisi and looking for towns within 30k of Assisi for day trips? If this is correct, check out Perugia (not a small town but interesting), Gubbio, Spello, and Montefalco. I think those are within 30k of Assisi. If you extend the 30k distance a bit, you could also consider some of the Tuscan hill towns farther to the west.
Deruta is a pretty town with local pottery. It is in that area. Very pretty town.
Try Trevi - a hilltown a short train ride away.
We stay in Spello. Beautiful view of Assisi from there and much quieter village.
There is a man-made waterfall near there. Marmore Waterfall. I don't remember how far it is from Assisi, but it was a really neat site. Nice to be in nature rather than a city for a while. There are hiking/walking trails up to the top of the falls. http://www.bellaumbria.net/Terni/Cascata_delle_Marmore_eng.htm
Kent and Mary's suggestions for Spello and Gubbio are excellent. Bevagna is sweet.
I 2nd the suggestion for Perugia. Also I'd add in Spoleto, nice town with a historic bridge.
As Kent said, Perugia is not a small town. It's the provincial capital of Umbria.
