Any suggestions on a good small town where we can enjoy, while also taking day trips to Rome? We are thinking of doing a 4 day weekend in Rome, but want to save money and stay a bit out of the city. Hopefully find a BnB with a pool for our kids, and be able to take public transportation into town.
Anzio and Nettuno are seaside towns with commuter train services into Rome. Castel Gandolfo or Frascati are other possible choices. Check train times to see what you are willing to put up with on a daily basis.
It's a hotel not a B&B but perhaps check https://www.grandhotelgianicolo.it/en/index.html it was sold out when we went but has a lovely pool and in Trastevere.
Tivoli is interesting and easily reached from Rome. Ostia Antica is like Pompeii, without the history. However, Ostia has shade and a sea breeze conspicuously missing from Pompeii. Castel Gandolfo is another nice place to visit.
We frequently stay in Ariccia in a fantastic b&b called Il Melograno and the owner is terrific. Her name is Rita Bovi and she is a wonderful hostess.
Buon Viaggio,
Thanks for the suggestions! I will definitely look into them all. :)
we discovered a place called Albano and loved it, especially a small church on the main square
Greencat,
Albano is a neat place as are Ariccia and Genzano do Roma. They are all next to each other on Via Appia Nuova.
Ariccia is famous for porchetta Romana. It's a whole pig packed in salt and rosemary then roasted.
Buon viaggio,
