sleeping in Rome

Getting ready to book an apt. in Rome with husband for April after Easter... and I have mixed advice... one in Travestere, another in the Jewish Quarter.. some say wonderful places.... then others say noisy and stay away! We want the neighborhood feel and quaint yet we want to be able to sleep at night... we were also told the location is good for walking to most sights.. HELP

See what I just wrote about hotels. We loved staying in the central Rome area last time close to Piazza Navona. I can't think of any place in Rome that isn't "quaint". We walked to all of the most famous sights and ate in the restaurants on Piazza Navona and in Campo de Fiori. I would start by listing out what you want to see.

Whether you would be able to actually sleep in trastevere depends. If your windows open up over a busy restaurant with obnoxious accordion players, guess again. But it could be a side street or on the back side of a building and therefore quiet. This applies no matter what area of Rome you are in. You should ask the agency before booking.

A quiet room for us is very important so we try to select our hotel room very carefully. The only noisy room we have ever had was at the Aberdeen. We prefer to be near the Pantheon so that area near the Termini no longer appeals to us. Last spring we stayed at Hotel Due Torri and it was quiet, room nice, and great breakfast. Five min walk to Pantheon, Campo Fiori, etc. Another quiet hotel is the Parlemento and in the off season it is a bargain for Rome.

Diane,

You might have a look at Casa san Guiseppe in the Trastevere area. As I recall, it was nice and quiet in that area. It's reasonably close to Piazza Trilussa, which has lots of restaurants, however the Hotel is on a quiet side street.

I did walk to the Pantheon and Campo di Fiori from there, but I don't remember exactly how long the walk was?

Happy travels!

On our last trip, we stayed at La Casa di Clelia - a beautiful newly refurbished apartment near Castle San Angelo. 2 mins from the major tourist bus stops, and tour stops, and 1 block off the major shopping street, but in a nice quiet area. I'd recommend it to anyone.
