We are staying with 3 adult children in Lake Como area, and Florence. Do you have any recommendations for accommodations? In early April, we will be in Lake Como for 4 nights and in Florence for 6 nights. Thank you!!
If you go to www.santasussana.org, they list a convent in Florence we stayed at. The "dorm" we were in could easily sleep 5 or 6 chaste people with breakfast included and a shower in the room. It had a terrific location down from the bridge, and a superb bistro at the corner of square with a penciled menu that changed daily--and one of the best steaks I have ever had! As you go out of the convent, it is to the left.It is the only convent they list. Do not know what season you are thinking of, however, we were there in November, and it took awhile to get hot water to the shower in the morning.
Big enuf group I would consider a rental ck www.vrbo.com.
I would suggest basing yourself somewhere really central (for the popular part of Lake Como)e.g. Argegno or Lenno, which are main stop off points for all the local ferries. You can even get a cheap centre lake ticket enabling you to do the typical touristy resorts like Bellagio, Menaggio and Varenna, all in one day and that is plenty of time. In terms of accommodation, I would consider renting an apartment or a villa. Will you have a car? If you do, these are great value apartments, available by the night - http://www.ownersdirect.co.uk/italy/it2385.htm and there are hosts of others on that site, as well as on this one www.holidayitalia.net
There are also reasonably prices hotels in both Argegno and Lenno - much cheaper than the tourist traps of Bellagio and Varenna.
Hope you have fun - you may find my Lake Como Expert blog of use - a host of tips on where to eat, shop etc - hope this helps - http://lakecomoexpert.blogspot.com/
