We are flying into Venice April 17 and flying out of Naples on May 3, 2014. We are ending our vacation in Positano for 4 or 5 days. Our flight leaves at 6:45 am on May 3. Is there reasonable transportation available to get to the airport from Positano or should we consider just getting to the airport late the night before and save the last night lodging cost?

The Naples Capodichino airport closes at 24:00 and does not open until 5:00. Your best bet is to book your last nite in Naples. Transportation from Positano ... only option would be private car.

Naples has some interesting things to see itself, such as the famous Archaeology Museum and a few other great things (such as Piazza Plebiscito or the San Severo Chapel). Just do a quick search online by googling "top 10 things to see in Naples" and you'll get some ideas. At a minimum you should eat a pizza in the city where it was invented.
Then all you have to do is leave a visit of Naples itself to your last day. Spend a night or two in Naples (the. Chiaia district around Piazza Plebiscito is good) and on the morning of your flight take a taxi to the airport. The Naples airport is very close to the city center (about 15-20 min by taxi at that time in the morning), therefore you don't need to stay at the airport, just stay in the city center.

With such an early flight, there's no way you'll get from Positano to the Naples airport on time unless you get up at a very "painful" hour and pay a small fortune for a private driver. I agree with Roberto that your best bet would be to spend one or two nights in Naples prior to your flight, and the Chiaia area mentioned is a good choice. I'd highly recommend Hotel Chiaia, which is in that area. Be sure to ask the hotel staff at least the day prior to travel to pre-arrange a Taxi to the airport.

Couldn't agree more with the previous comments. Cut down your stay in Positano by one day (or better, add one additional day), and spend the final night before you depart Naples, in Naples. The Archeological Museum is excellent. Have a pizza at da Michele. And consider traveling from Positano to Naples by boat, which will give you a spectacular ride including a wonderful view of Mt. Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples.
