However, you do not always know how many beds you are getting... so you really need to email directly or you may end up with sleeping accomodations that do not work.

So so true. Single is usually a twin bed or daybed in the smallest room in the hotel (haha). Double for single use is exactly that: a room with bedding meant for 2 persons but will be used only by 1. Double could be a double with a double bed, a queen bed, 2 twins pushed together "matrimoniale", or 2 separated twins (though usually there will be a distinction made between a double-bedded set-up and a twin-bedded set-up). Every great once in awhile at higher-end hotels you might even get a king-size bed. Triple might be a double plus a twin bed, a double and a pull-out chair/sofabed/daybed, a double and a cot, or 3 twins, or 2 twins and a cot/chair/sofabed. A quad could be any combination possible of bedding suitable for 4 persons! So it becomes kind of important to decide who can or will sleep where.

And a single is priced ONLY for one person, even if the room can easily accommodate two. In the context of a hostel room, a single person who would want a quad room by themselves (private), would have to pay the per person rate times four...
