Skype in Italy

So I called and had my Tmobile Android unlocked and will purchase a sim card once in Italy. A travel agent said I should download Skype to use in Italy. Do I need to download in USA or once in Italy and will it do anything else that my Italy sim card won't do for me.
I'm not a techhy person.

Kathy, download it while still in the U.S. for a number of reasons. The most important are probably so you can set up a Skype account on your computer, which is easier than trying to do it on your phone, and so you can test it out at home. What type of Android phone do you have? T-Mobile has sometimes blocked some of its phones from some apps, but you can generally get around that limitation by getting the .apk file elsewhere and copying it from your computer to your phone and running it there. Another reason to try and load Skype here. You note you're not a techie (techy? tecky?) person, so what I've just written may put you off getting Skype at all. If not, see if it is in the Android Market and download it. If you can't find it, post again and I'll help you get it and put it on your phone. One more thing to point out: T-Mobile has its own "Skype-like" wifi app that lets you do wifi calling from anywhere with a wifi connection and the minutes just count as if you called from your phone to someplace covered by your plan. That is, a call over this wifi app in Europe back to the U.S. would be treated as a U.S. to U.S. call. If you have lots of minutes (or unlimited minutes), the call costs you nothing extra. This app is only on some of T-Mobile's phones. Another reason why it would help to know which you had.
