Would a "skort" be appropriate to wear in lieu of shorts on a hot day? Going to a sporting event while there so thinking it would be OK. Also bringing some linen pants.

I mean, skorts are just skirts with hidden shorts, so I can't imagine why they wouldn't be good. And I certainly hope the will be, because that's my main wardrobe for my upcoming trip there. Just make sure you have one that is below the knee for the places that require that.

I also wear skorts. The problem I find is that most are too short on me (I am only 5.4). A few companies do sell Tall length and that is what I purchase, they hit me just at the knee.
Land’s End and Baleaf are 2 that I have purchased from.

I do the same as Barbara and buy a Tall length so it hits me at the knees. I’m 5’3”.
