Skirts in Italy

Ladies... Is it ok to wear skirts that hit the knee into churches in Italy? Or would they consider that too short? Does the skirt length have to be below the knee?

You're fine. I wore slacks. It's more about respectful dressing and behavior. No shorts, crop tops etc. I always have my shoulders covered with a scarf or shawl. Men, remove your hat. Speak VERY quietly, don't intrude on private prayers etc. I'm always shocked when I'm in a church and some jerk (and it frequently ISN'T an American) is taking pictures (with flash) while chatting away with friends while some devout soul is praying.

As long it isn't a micro mini you should be fine. It certainly can be above your knees, no worries. If you are really worried about it, bring a wide scarf with you that you do a sort of sarong-wrap type thing around your waist when you are in the church.

The keeping your shoulders covered advice is important!!! One of my friends had to duck into a nearby shop to buy a shawl. Her cutaway shoulder top was deemed immodest. Ladies, even if the neckline is high, the shoulders sill cannot be in view!

Cpris are ok too. To pur astonishment, my husband was even allowed into St. Mark's in Venice wearing dress shorts!

For St. Peter's and St. Marks and other big churches, it may depend on who is keeping an eye out for modest dress that day. For those you may want a longer skirt or one that you can skoosh down to make it look like it goes below your knees just to play it safe. Or wear capris or slacks those days.
