I have an ankle length travel skirt that I would like to wear in Italy. One travel site that I looked at indicated that only the Australians wear this length of skirt. I do not want to stick out. Is this length ok?
Considering that maxi dresses have been back in style (at least in US) for the past year or two, I don't see it as a concern. And it looks like riding skirts are coming back in vogue again this fall. (Great, now we all have to go back out and buy longer skirts again.)
Wear what you want.
Enjoy your trip.
Huh? Never heard that ONLY Australians wear ankle-length skirts.....really didn't notice many women wearing them when I was in Australia a year and half ago. They looked very much like Americans, but they, of course, sounded much different. But, then lots of American ladies wear ankle-length skirts.
I take two skirts when I travel: one above the knee, and one slightly above ankle length. No one has ever confused me for an Australian (not that there is a thing wrong with that...charming people).
The longer skirt will be great if you visit St. Peters or other churches.
You didn't mention what time of year you are traveling. If in the heat of summer, you might like a shorter skirt some days.
Wear what you like and what looks good on you.
One caution: if your skirt is a true maxi skirt, it could be a pain lifting it to go up stairs or when catching trains/Metros, etc. So, for safety reasons, I would suggest making sure it is not so long or flowing that it could be come a true safety hazard (or just a distraction)
"only the Australians wear this length of skirt" (ankle length)
I think they meant 'hippies' perhaps, and not Australians per se.
As an Australian woman with two teenage daughters I can vouch that we don't even own an ankle length skirt. Knee length skirts (or just above) and shorts are what we usually wear. Which is why I came onto this forum. We will be in Italy in a couple of weeks and I too wondered how to dress - particularly when visiting the Vatican, and other Duomos etc. Maybe we need to find some maxi skirts.
Access to Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, Vatican Gardens and Saint Peter's Basilica is permitted only to visitors dressed appropriately (no sleeveless blouses, no miniskirts, no shorts, no hats allowed).
This is from the Vatican website, so it appears one can wear a skirt above the knee (but not too much).
I wear longer skirts from midi-to-maxi all the time. Same with dresses. Same with Italian women. You will also see mini skirts on women with fantastic legs. I hate them. Dress as you like.
Thanks David. I saw that information but thought it a little open for interpretation. Do not want to get turned away because our skirts are a little short. Will err on the side of caution.
I was in Italy in July and saw skirts and dresses of all lengths. I also saw men and women who did not have shoulders AND knees covered turned away at the Sistine chapel. It seems to depend who is manning the door. Play it safe and make sure your knees are covered.
You can wear any length.
However if you have nice legs about half of the Italians would appreciate if you wore a miniskirt.
Spoken like a true Ialian, Roberto.
What travel site? As an Australian I am offended. Everyone should know we only wear thongs ( flip flops for you Americans), shorts and singlets.
