Looking for recs on ski resorts that would be fairly easy to get to from Florence and/or Bologna. Somewhere relatively inexpensive and family friendly would be great. Are there ski-in/ski-out type resorts there? One blog I looked at recommended Fiumalbo near Abetone. I'm looking for names of places to stay and where to rent skis. We would rather not rent a car, so information on transportation from Florence would be helpful as well. Thanks!
Did you see that resort in this article? When are you going?

My first thought would be to check the elevation and current snow conditions. These day, even resorts high in the Alps have trouble with snow cover. A place that far south, at lower elevation, would give me pause. But maybe they are having a good year.
We are planning on going in between Christmas and New Year's. We are leaving the US around 12/26, but need to be in Rome by 12/31. We have been to Venice and Rome on another trip, so thought we'd go to Florence this time to see the sights thee and maybe do some skiing for 1-2 days.
Snow coverage as early as Christmas time may be a problem. Just for your info, here there are some webcams at Abetone and you will see how now the situation is less then desirable. Of course each year has different weather and nobody can tell now how next December will be. This year even most alpine resorts have to rely on artificial snow.

As for transportation, there are a few buses per day from Pistoia. In spite of Abetone being relatively close to Florence and Pistoia, the road is endlessly curvy and slow.
