Could someone recommend a well located hotel in Cortina for ski season reasonable priced?
Cortina is not the most convenient ski resort out there. It is very charming, but there are 2 (or even 3 depending how you count) lift departure points on opposing ends on town, and only one of those is within walking distance from the center of town (and even then, not a great walk with ski boots).
So, you will end up using the ski buses quite a lot, and they depart from Piazzale Roma, right in the center.
Therefore, the closer you are to that square, the better (in my opinion), plus you will benefit from the charms of the town in the evening.
With that in mind: the Hotel de la Poste is hard to beat, but any other choice along or around Corso Italia will be OK.
And to be honest, while Cortina is a charming place to stay for a few nights, the downhill skiing is better and easier to access if you stay somewhere along the "Sella Ronda" circuit. Corvara, Alta Badia (La Villa), San Cassiano are all very solid options, also Wolkenstein (Selva) and St. Christina further west with steeper slopes.
By the way, I remembered your earlier questions and I see that you did not find the answers you were looking for. There's a British ski forum called Snowheads, with a relatively senior community, that might be more helpful than here for ski resort-related questions, if you are able to ignore the laughably dated and tacky website design.
I hasten to add that I have no business interest whatsoever in that forum.
Excellent information! Thank you!
We are staying in Corvara the week before and travel agent suggested Cortina for the following week for variation.
Is there somewhere else you would recommend?
Ok, if you are staying a week in Corvara then no need to stay in Wolkenstein/St Christina because you can reach them on ski in maybe 1.5 hours from Corvara.
Therefore, Cortina is a great addition to the trip, and will work very well in combination with Corvara.
Otherwise:
- North of Corvara, you have Kronplatz which has excellent skiing and amenities but is a bit lacking in mountain scenery compared to Corvara. There are some excellent hotels out there to make up for it; if you can afford, for example, the Hubertus hotel, you are in for a treat, and there are other similarly stylish options.
- Northeast from Cortina, you have the Drei Zinnen area. I have never been there, but it looks like great skiing, and with excellent mountain scenery too. Main bases are Vierschach (Versciaco) and Sexten.
And there are dozens of other areas that are worth a look (Alleghe, Val di Fassa, San Martino di Castrozza)...but perhaps for a second visit once you are in love with the Dolomites ;)
You are a marvelous resource, thank you so much. Going to take your good advice. Tried for a reservation at the De la Poste but they are booked. Going to see if an agent can get us in.
Thank you again!
If we can't get into De la poste is there another you would recommend?
The others the agent recommended is Hotel Europa, Ciassa Lorenzi, and the Ambra.
In Cortina we booked the Villa Eden.
I do not know the hotels, but the Ambra has the best location in my opinion, being nearer the pedestrian section of town. This said, Europa and Ciasa Lorenzi aren't far, so depending on price they do look like solid choices as well.
As for Villa Eden: not been but looks good, 1/4 mile from the lifts and almost ski-in (not ski-out) if the snow is OK.
Thank you.
Some of the reviews for Ambra made us uncomfortable so we're trying to book the Hotel Europa.
